Thank you ABC-7 for featuring our intergenerational event with Mission Venice Youth Group, celebrating Older Americans Month! 🌟 This year’s theme, “Powered by Connection,” perfectly encapsulates the joy and well-being that blossomed as youth and seniors bonded over billiards, Zumba, and volunteer activities. Research shows that these meaningful connections enhance well-being and foster a sense of belonging across generations. Thank you again, ABC-7, for highlighting the profound impact of our community coming together. ❤️ #SeniorFriendshipCenters #MissionVenice #PoweredByConnection #OlderAmericansMonth https://lnkd.in/eKUrgjER

We build vibrant communities by advancing wellness, connection, and enrichment throughout the journey of aging.
About us
Senior Friendship Centers is a nonprofit organization serving older adults in four counties in Southwest Florida. We are THE safety net for close to 15,000 seniors living in our service area, providing over a half-million individual “units of service” to older adults in the areas of medical and dental services, caregiving, meals, exercise classes, lifelong learning, economic assistance, and socialization. Through state and local partnerships, we were able to improve the health of thousands of uninsured seniors on limited incomes. Tens of thousands of older adults in Southwest Florida have benefited from the Senior Friendship Centers’ programs and services since our founding in 1973 by Brother William Geenen, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross Order of Notre Dame University (C.S.C.). As an organization, our goals are to: -Empower older adults to live active, healthy lives to improve all aspects of health. -Promote good nutrition and physical activity to maintain healthy lifestyles. -Provide crisis/supportive intervention and help promote financial stability through education and community resources. -Allow older people to maintain their independence and live in their own homes for as long as possible. A belief in “People Helping People,” has been the foundation of Senior Friendship Centers for more than four decades. Volunteers serve in nearly every facet of the organization. Our award-winning centers and our clinics have drawn national and international attention as models for the delivery of programs and services to older adults.

For May is Older Americans Month, Senior Friendship Centers recently hosted an advocacy summit, featuring national senior advocacy leader Bob Blancato and Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner. Thanks to Ian Swaby from Observer Media Group for this outstanding article that highlights the crucial importance of advocacy. It also covers the impactful roles we can all play to influence federal policies and programs directly affecting older Americans in preparation for the upcoming 2024 elections. Here are the key takeaways from the event: - Engage with elected officials: Your voice matters and reaching out to elected officials can make a real difference in advocating for seniors. - Vote—it matters!: As we approach this crucial election year, your vote is essential in shaping policies that impact older adults. - Stay connected with Senior Friendship Centers (SFC): We’re committed to making older adults more visible and valued, and we invite you to join us in this movement. https://lnkd.in/e_qZy-6N
