For those faced with processing a recent cancer diagnosis and just beginning their treatment journey, the information onslaught can be overwhelming - things to do, people to see, what to eat, medicines and payments. It is a burden on top of an already hard time. That is where the blessing of an oncology nurse navigator comes in. At Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, the already strong cancer care team has five very special roles - our nurse navigators. “Our navigators meet the patient at the time of diagnosis,” explains Katherine. “They follow them through the entire journey whatever that may entail, whether it is chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. The become foundational to the patient because they may see different doctors and other contacts, but their navigator remains a familiar face by their side.” At St. Rita’s, the close-knit team of nurse navigators focus on specific areas including breast, high-risk breast, lung and gastrointestinal as part of the larger staff of 23 oncology RN’s across radiation and infusion. The navigators are supported by a network including a clinical research coordinator, dietician, pharmacy technician and a social worker. Together, these professionals literally navigate all aspects of oncological care for the patient. Because they are assigned to patients for life, a nurse navigator can have 300 patients each. All St. Rita’s nurse navigators are infusion RN’s with nearly all the team as Oncology Certified Nurses OCN®. The means they are clinically trained on core competencies through the oncology nursing society and certified in medical coursework, clinical practice, nursing administration, research and consultation to offer the best possible care to patients. The work of St. Rita’s navigators is so key because cancer as a disease is so multilayered and cumbersome. They are valued beyond measure by patients for all they do to enhance the care experience.

As part of our continued partnership with Vanguard Sentinel Career & Technology Centers, Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital (Toledo, Ohio) recently welcomed students from the Health Careers Academy. The students completed their two-week clinical experience rotation through every hospital department. This experience allowed students opportunity to apply their classroom learnings by providing a visual of the day-to-day operations of a hospital as well as understanding how each of the various hospital departments have a role in helping the community. “This experience proves to be an invaluable extension of our classroom lesson and will help them plan for their careers in the future”, said Sandy Reinhart, M.Ed., BSN, RN, Health Careers Academy instructor.

Mercy Health - Marcum and Wallace Hospital has been in Irvine, Kentucky, for generations, and even now, its staff still reflects that. "A number of our staff members are born here, some of them are third or fourth generation workers,” says Trena Stocker, president of Marcum and Wallace. The hospital works with the community to continue providing opportunities for future generations. "You have people doing those things because they want to see our community grow," Trena says. "And I think that by having that passion, is what moves the dot." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gaRKyY_p

Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital (Toledo, Ohio) was excited to welcome two 4th grade classrooms from Noble Elementary! Jana Martin, director of Community Relations, led the REACH career education program with these students throughout the school year. The program culminated with a 2-hour facility tour, incorporating activities that highlighted radiology, cardiopulmonary, laboratory, physical therapy, and plant/facilities. REACH introduced students to the “world or work”. On a monthly basis, in-classroom instruction was provided, educating students on the types of jobs available at the hospital. Additionally, students learned how education and work are related and the soft skills necessary for school and work such as teamwork, critical thinking, and proper habits and attitudes.

Congratulations to Deidre Rohaley, doctor of pharmacy and our clinical pharmacy manager and residency program director for Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center (Toledo, Ohio)! She was recently recognized as Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Preceptor of the Year by the The University of Findlay. This student-nominated award honors a distinguished preceptor who has made a positive impact on students through their exemplary teaching and mentoring. Deidre has worked for Mercy Health for over 18 years in a variety of roles, starting as a pharmacy intern and eventually moving into her current role. She primarily precepts pharmacy students and residents on infectious disease rotations, as well as drug information and research projects. She is passionate about teaching those new to the profession, as well as staff development and growth for all team members. She has taken over 53 students on rotation for both introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) since 2014. “Dr. Rohaley is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to reviewing patient charts to make effective recommendations that result in therapy optimization and positive outcomes for patients,” commented one of her students. “She showed how a pharmacist can provide valuable contributions through recommendations to the physician rounding team and in working with other health care professionals.” We are so proud to have her on our team – congratulations on this well-deserved honor.
