As we continue to help customers proactively mitigate residential risks, we're also looking to the future of wildfire detection with advanced sensors. Digital smell for early wildfire detection is one emerging technology that the State Farm Ventures team is exploring. With this technology, sensor networks process and distinguish wildfire odor signatures in microscopic amounts. This could enable first responders to recognize wildfires before visible smoke or fire and minimize the risk to people, property, and the environment. Eric Lu credits his drive, passion and resilience to his family and upbringing. Placed in two refugee camps in Malaysia and the Philippines at the age of six, then moving from Vietnam to the U.S., Eric had to acclimate to a new language and culture. For the Maddox family, Memorial Day signifies another opportunity to honor the legacy of their son, U.S. Army Sgt. Anthony Maddox. "Our son made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom." State Farm employees Jerome and Frances Maddox lost their son July 22, 2013 to fatal injuries sustained in Afghanistan. "Anthony joined the Army right after high school. He was a Petroleum Supply Specialist and a Heavy Wheeled Vehicle Operator. He was dependable, easygoing and was known for helping others reach their goals. Anthony found his passion and was committed to the Army. "We are committed to keeping his legacy alive and supporting others who experience similar losses. As May marks Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Sales Leader Maryeth Loriaux finds it essential to recognize different lived experiences. "I have been fortunate to experience the richness of the Dutch-Indonesian culture from my father’s side. Growing up, my sister and I spent extended amounts of time at my Oma and Opa's (grandma and grandpa's) home. People could stop by the house any time and there was always food and a listening ear." Prior to becoming a State Farm independent contractor agent, Dustin Tsu worked in the investment management industry for 15 years. After the birth of his first child, Dustin and his wife moved back to Los Angeles from New York to be closer to family. "I was still working in finance at this point but felt compelled to leave corporate life and pursue small business possibilities as our two children grew older.
