About us

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is a private, nonprofit organization that has been serving the community since 1926. At Goodwill, we believe that all people, regardless of situation, should have access to meaningful employment. Through workforce development programs, we help individuals develop the skills they need for today's job market. A significant portion of the funding for our programs comes from sales of donated items in our retail stores. Merchandise for our stores is provided through the generous donations of clothing and household items from the community. These donations are critical to our mission. By donating to Goodwill or shopping in our stores, you are helping to support workforce development programs that serve over 45,000 people in northwest N.C. each year. Goodwill provides a wide range of training, placement and workforce development services to help people develop the skills they need to find jobs and become more independent. These services are offered at our Workforce Development Centers and are offered in partnership with area community colleges, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Department of Social Services, Mental Health and other community organizations.

  • High school was challenging for Max. When she learned that she would be held back and wouldn’t graduate with her class, she was devastated. She realized that it was time to change how she pursued her education. She tried online courses but didn’t feel motivated or engaged in the learning process. “I always imagined walking down the stage and getting my diploma. I wanted to do something to prove to myself that I could do it,” Max said. “When I found out Mitchell Community College offered the HiSET (high school equivalency diploma), I figured, why not?” At orientation, Max met Goodwill’s Access Center Career Coach, Kilby Watson. “She encouraged everyone to start the journey,” Max said. “I needed somebody like her in my corner to keep me going.” Max liked that Kilby wasn’t interested merely in helping her earn a diploma. “She was excited every time we met and asked about life and how she could help in any way. It made me feel like a person.” After the Basic Skills courses and practice tests, Max passed each HiSET exam one by one. Now, Max is preparing for her graduation, cap and gown in hand. On May 9, she’ll walk across the stage, just like she imagined – and she’s even been selected to speak at graduation. With Kilby’s help, Max has mapped out a five-year plan to pursue cosmetology training and eventually start a business. Max has advice for anyone who’s thinking about getting their diploma but isn’t sure where to start: “Do it for yourself. The feeling of being proud of yourself and what you accomplished is a feeling you will never get over.”

  • The 24th Annual Goodwill Golf Tournament was held on May 9, 2024, at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. The tournament benefits our Outreach Scholarship Fund, which helps our program participants achieve their career goals through education and skills training. We're also honored to have been the last tournament to be hosted at the Tanglewood Park Clubhouse. Its last day of operation will be Monday, May 13. We can't wait to see the new and improved clubhouse in 2025. Thanks to everyone who participated to make this tournament a success. We hope to see you again next year! • Did you know there's more to your local Goodwill than just donating and shopping? 👀 Paul came to Goodwill to receive services from the Project Re-Entry program. Paul worked with his Re-Entry Specialist to find steady employment. Thanks to his hard work and determination, Paul has reached a comfortable place in his life and we couldn't be prouder. Watch to hear Paul tell his story.

  • Happy Goodwill Week to all who celebrate! 💙   There's lots to love about shopping secondhand, including the unique finds and low prices, but there's so much more to your local Goodwill than meets the eye.   💖 We're a local non-profit. Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are recognized nationally as one of the most efficient charities, with 87% of our revenues funding our mission and sustainability. This allows us to serve 26,000 people across 31 counties in NC each year. 💼 We offer workforce development services. Whether you need help brushing up on your interview skills or need help accessing college courses, our workforce development team can help you reach your career goals. We even have specialized programs to help veterans, high school students, and justice-involved individuals enter the workforce. 🤝 Non-profits work best when they collaborate to meet the community's needs, which is why we started the Good Neighbor Program. Our mission is to help people find long-term success through stable employment, but the Good Neighbor program allows us to partner with other local non-profits that offer services for local families whose immediate needs we cannot meet. 🌱 Shopping secondhand is a more sustainable alternative. Making a pair of jeans requires over 1,900 gallons of water, which is equivalent to what the average person drinks over a seven-year period. Buying pre-loved clothing means you aren't using any more of our limited natural resources. Let us know in the comments if you learned anything new about your local Goodwill. • It's not too late to get your spring cleaning done! 🌷📦 If your space needs a refresh, it might be time to declutter and donate. We're sharing our tips to help you get started: 💥 Start Small, Tackle Big: Begin with one area at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Whether it's a closet, a drawer, or a room, conquering small spaces one at a time creates a clutter-free home. 📦 Donate Unwanted Items: Spread a little thrift love by parting ways with items you no longer need. Your preloved items may be valuable to someone else! 🗑️ Create a "Keep, Toss, Donate" System: Sort through your belongings with a systematic approach. Identify items to keep, toss, or donate. This method makes decision-making more effortless. ⏰ Establish a Routine: Maintain a clutter-free environment by incorporating decluttering into your routine. A few minutes each day or a dedicated decluttering day each month can help you stay on top of things and prevent future chaos.
