About us

Contemporary Calgary provides Calgary and its visitors with a significant visual arts destination dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The former Centennial Planetarium, itself a significant work of brutalist architecture, is a world-class gallery where we deliver outstanding local, national and international contemporary art programming. As a young and ambitious institution, we uphold the values that make us a welcoming, inclusive, engaging and relevant space that is expansive in its representation of artists and ideas. We exhibit art and offer arts related programming because: We believe that art can foster conversation and encourage the exploration of new ideas and critical thinking. We believe in the power of art to transform the places and the lives we live. We share a passion for art that is relevant, meaningful, and challenging. We share a passion for Calgary as a global city of choice. With recent exhibitions that include ground-breaking contemporary names like Yoko Ono, Robert Houle, Chitra Ganesh, Diane Arbus and Marman and Borins, the Gallery plays a central role in Canada’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of Calgary’s growing contemporary art quarter. In the spirit of respect and truth, Contemporary Calgary acknowledges the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We also acknowledge that Contemporary Calgary’s building is situated on land immediately adjacent to the Bow River that has shaped this land and its people for generations.

June 2 – Exhibition Tour + Film Screening: Crash (1996) 🎥 dir. David Cronenberg As we approach the closing of Anton Ginzburg’s exhibition Surface on June 16, join us for a screening of David Cronenberg’s Crash (1996). The screening will take place at 5:30 PM, and will be preceded by a tour of Ginzburg’s solo show at 5 PM, led by Assistant Curator Muriel N. Kahwagi. FREE with registration 🔗 https://bit.ly/4aHfYGw 🌟 5 PM: Anton Ginzburg: Surface exhibition tour, led by Assistant Curator Muriel N. Kahwagi. 🌟 5:30 PM: Crash (1996) film screening, Dome Theater. Crash (1996) is based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name, David Cronenberg’s Crash follows a film producer who, following a car accident, finds himself drawn into a community of symphorophiliacs who are aroused by car crashes, and tries to reignite his sexual relationship with his wife. Considered to be one of Cronenberg’s most iconic – and most controversial – films, Crash is a reflection on the relationship between humans, technology, sex, and violence. Anton Ginzburg: Surface reflects on the use of technology as it relates to cultural labour, data aesthetics, and machine learning. By employing algorithms to expand on the formal elements of art, its consumption, and transmutation, Ginzburg underlines the ever-evolving meaning of representation, data visualization and automatization in our digital age. Anont Ginzburg: Surface is on view in the Morris & Ann Dancyger Observatory Gallery until June 16, 2024. #ContemporaryCalgary #AntonGinzburg #Surface #DavidCronenberg #Crash #Exhibitiontour #Filmscreening #YYCEvents #YYCnow #YYCArts

Each year, we have the privilege of honoring outstanding members of our art community who help shape this city, province and country. This year, we are thrilled to shine a light on an incredible group of Honorary Chairs whose profound impact and steadfast support for art and community is so deserving of recognition. Here's a little more about their backgrounds and impact. ✨Faye HeavyShield A decorated sculptor and installation artist, Faye HeavyShield’s art is a stunning expression of her upbringing in the Kainai (Blood) Nation of Southern Alberta. A fluent speaker of her first language, Blackfoot, Faye honed her skills at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Exhibited across Canada and the US, Faye’s decorated work is a tapestry of memory, environment, body, and language, with Land and rivers as significant influences. Contemporary Calgary is especially proud to have presented Faye’s work aohkii/water as part of Yoko Ono’s Water Event 1971/2020. Faye is also a member of the Indigenous Advisory Council for the ksahkomiitapiiks artist residency, a program co-created by Faye, Adrian Stimson, Elder Clarence Wolfleg and the Contemporary Calgary team which seeks to interrogate and nurture our relationships with the land through the lens of Niitsitapi artists. ✨Morris and Ann Dancyger Esteemed entrepreneurs and philanthropists, Morris and Ann are a pillar of community involvement. Ann has dedicated her career to education and shaping young minds while Morris has served as a pharmacist, bettering his community through his profession. Their longstanding support of Contemporary Calgary has been pivotal in fostering artistic creativity and promoting cultural enrichment within the community and we are so proud to have named the Morris and Ann Dancyger Observatory Gallery in recognition of their generous support which opened in March, 2024. ✨Marcel Dzama Since rising to prominence in the late 1990s, Winnipeg-born Marcel Dzama has made his mark through a whimsical style, distinctive colour palette, and a fluidity between mediums that include drawing, sculpture, film and costume design. His immediately recognizable visual language draws from folk vernacular and art history, yet passes through the filter of contemporary influences. We are proud to present The Ghosts of Canoe Lake: New Work by Marcel Dzama, which was co-produced by McMichael Canadian Art Collection and opens at Contemporary Calgary on June 27, 2024.
