The NWMO was happy to host a Taking care Youth Kangoo event at Freezer Fitness in Mildmay on May 22. The event was open to community members between the ages of 18-30. It was a great night, promoting health and wellness while learning more about the NWMO and the proposed deep geological repository in South Bruce. Thanks to all for attending, and we look forward to hosting another event in July!

The NWMO wishes to sincerely thank Municipality of South Bruce for an informative, community-led Nuclear Exploration Forum last week. Attendees heard from NWMO President and CEO Laurie Swami, South Bruce Mayor Mark Goetz, the Honourable Lisa Thompson, MPP Huron-Bruce, and Ben Lobb, MP Huron-Bruce, about the opportunities for the community should a deep geological repository be sited in the region. Guests at the Forum were able to speak directly to NWMO experts, including from Environmental Science, Regulatory, Transportation, Safety, and Human Resources. In addition, residents were able to learn more about the South Bruce Hosting Agreement, which provides clarity for the community about what they could expect, should Canada’s deep geological repository be sited in the SON-South Bruce area. Sincere thanks to the community for your continued commitment to learning about Canada’s plan for used nuclear fuel.

The Moose Hide Campaign calls on men and boys to have open and honest conversations about gender-based violence. This powerful initiative is rooted in the traditional Indigenous practice of using moose hide as a symbol of honour, respect, and commitment to protecting women and children. This grassroots movement began in 2011 when Paul Lacerte, an Indigenous leader from British Columbia, was hunting moose with his daughter Raven, and knew he had to take action to ensure his daughter could live a life free from violence and oppression. In 2023, we conducted testing to place the Used Fuel Containers under extreme pressures far exceeding realistic conditions from possible scenarios including a future ice age. At the end of this testing, the container remained leak-tight, meaning the used nuclear fuel will be contained safely even under extreme events. We include details on the engineering, safety, and technical research of the deep geological repository in our annual report, which you can read here: https://nwmo.co/3QEbZTV

Today, on the National Day of Awareness for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls, we reflect on the powerful Calls for Justice outlined in the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The National Inquiry was launched in 2016, calling on the federal government to begin investigating the high rates of violence and disappearance affecting Indigenous women and girls. Over the course of the Inquiry, 2,386 people shared their stories and experiences, leading to a final report with 231 Calls for Justice directed at all levels of government, industries, and individual Canadians. These Calls for Justice demand that we address the systemic issues and colonial violence that have led to the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Today and every day, we amplify Indigenous voices, honour those we've lost, and work towards a future where every Indigenous person is protected and feels safe on their lands.
