In recognition of #AsianHeritageMonth, we’re continuing our series on some of our programs and services that specifically support the health and well-being of patients and families of Asian heritage. Navigating a pregnancy can be challenging for many young parents, but for those adjusting to a new country and culture, the struggles can be even more profound. The Youth Pregnancy and Parenting Program (YPPP) supports pregnant youth aged 24 and under and their babies by offering prenatal education, resources and postpartum assistance. With over 100 prenatal referrals annually, many clients are newcomers to Canada, including international students and young adults on work permits. “Families from different backgrounds may have unique cultural nuances in parenting, food choices and lifestyle,” said Kari Stout, Program Coordinator. “They feel less judged and better understood when staff are familiar with their culture or come from a similar background.” You can learn more about the YPPP’s health care services at https://lnkd.in/gfpJX8cy

As construction progresses, these are the latest updates. To facilitate the demolition of the Park Centre and Rotunda for the new Yurkovich Family Pavilion, teams throughout the hospital were relocated. Last fall, programs and services from the Rotunda moved to the renovated fifth floor of the North Tower, while the IV clinic relocated to the ground floor of the Milan Ilich Pavilion. The Cancer Care Clinic was renovated and relocated to the ground floor of the Milan Ilich Pavilion, opening its doors in November 2023. Work is currently underway on the interim Psychiatric Assessment Unit near the South Tower, with planning for the Yurkovich Family Pavilion procurement and pre-work for the Rotunda demolition also in progress. At Vancouver Coastal Health we care for everyone and continue to celebrate our diversity. May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, a worldwide recognition of sexual and gender diversities and has been celebrated for the last 20 years. This year's theme is “No One Left Behind: Equality, Freedom and Justice for All,” a call for unity, advocacy and celebration with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allies. We recognize that people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions deserve and should expect equitable access to health care and equitable outcomes of care. Today and every day, we strive towards solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ colleagues, patients, clients, residents and community.
