We are entering Severe Weather Season in Minnesota. As always, we here at GREAT RIVERS MUTUAL encourage you to be sky aware and to have access to timely and accurate weather information to keep you and your property safe. 

When severe weather hits, we are often inundated with contractors from outside our area who go door to door looking for business. (We refer to them as “STORMCHASERS.”) They use high-pressure tactics to get you to sign a contract for repair and work hard to turn you against your insurance company. They often require an up-front down payment. Sometimes they do the work, sometimes they do not. But we rarely see a satisfied customer in the end.

Disaster strikes at the most inconvenient times. We are never prepared for it, and at the time it can be stressful and overwhelming. However, before you hire a contractor, we encourage you to pause to do a little research. Ask around for references. When considering a contractor, ask yourself if you’ve seen them in the area before. Are they well known? Do you know someone who has used them and been satisfied with the service and workmanship? Can they give you a list of local references? Have you checked with the Better Business Bureau to see if they are reputable?

REMEMBER: Your insurance company is not your enemy. We take great pride at GREAT RIVERS MUTUAL in delivering the promise we sold to you when you bought your policy and paid the premium. We encourage you to use local, reputable contractors from our area whom you know and see on a regular basis–those people you see in your neighborhood, at church, at the store and in your community. These contractors will be there to do the work, and will stand behind what they do. Think of your contractor and your insurance company both as part of your team. Each plays a different role but each are equally important. We will work together with your local contractor to ensure your repairs get done and we, along with your contractor, want you to be satisfied with the results.
