The number of U.S. births fell last year. It was the lowest count in more than 40 years. A little under 3.6 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2023, about 76,000 fewer than the year before. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the provisional statistics on Thursday. Birth rates have long been falling for teenagers and younger women, but rising for women in their 30s and 40s. But last year, birth rates fell for all women younger than 40, and were flat for women in their 40s.

Union Pacific's first-quarter profit crept 1% higher and topped Wall Street expectations as the railroad tightened up on expenses even though it delivered slightly less freight. The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said Thursday it made $1.64 billion, or $2.69 per share. That's more than the $2.51 per share analysts expected. CEO Jim Vena said the railroad is building on the momentum it established at the end of last year. Its revenue was slightly lower than last year because fuel surcharge revenue fell on lower fuel prices. Union Pacific said the results have it feeling more optimistic about profit growth this year, so it will restart stock repurchases in the second quarter.

By mid-2024, Claudia Sheinbaum will most likely become Mexico’s first female president. She would also be its first leader with a Jewish background in a country that’s home to nearly 100 million Catholics. Sheinbaum is a former mayor of Mexico City and the governing party’s candidate. Ahead of the June 2 national election, she has kept a comfortable lead in all polls against two opposition candidates. Sheinbaum's four grandparents were Jews who immigrated from Lithuania and Bulgaria. She was born in Mexico City and her parents didn't raise her under any religion. According to her campaign team, she considers herself a woman of faith but is not religiously affiliated.

United Methodist delegates have overwhelmingly endorsed a constitutional amendment seen by advocates as a way of defusing debates over the role of LGBTQ people in the church. It seeks to do that by giving rule-making autonomy to each region of the international church. Delegates voted 586-164 for the “regionalization” proposal on the third day of their 11-day General Conference, the legislative body of the United Methodist Church. It is meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. The plan would create multiple regional conferences —- one for the United States and others covering areas ranging from the Philippines to Europe to Africa.
