With their remarkable wingspan and distinctive hunting methods, Ospreys are a true wonder of nature. They are one of the most powerful and fastest birds in Canada and they sure know how to pick their nesting spots – like on top of a crane in Johnstown, Ontario. This caused quite the disturbance. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) staff rely on this crane to maintain infrastructure along the St. Lawrence River. They had to lower their crane every night to prevent nesting distress for both their teams and the Ospreys. They reached out to our Biodiversity Program team for assistance. Our biodiversity team lead and our teammates in Brockville sprang into action to work with OPG’s biodiversity team to coordinate the installation of a freestanding Osprey nest box on-site. They handled the task with finesse to ensure a safe and permanent home for our local Osprey. On World Migratory Bird Day, we’re not just celebrating Ospreys, we’re also tipping our hats to our 40+ year history of protecting these majestic birds that nest on top of our hydro poles and other important equipment. #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #OspreyProtection #BirdNestAdventures

Our partnership with The ACT Foundation empowers students to respond to opioid overdoses and potentially save lives. For Emergency Preparedness Week 2024, we highlight the crucial program and how it provides high schoolers in Thunder Bay the knowledge and skills to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, administer naloxone to reverse the overdose and take action in emergencies. Empowering young people creates safer communities for everyone. Read more about this impactful initiative on our blog: https://ow.ly/7bPj50RzKyv #ThunderBay #EPWeek2024 #Plan4EverySeason #PreparedON

Safety starts with being prepared and having a plan. Emergency Preparedness Week (May 5-11) is an event to promote actions Ontarians can take to prepare for emergencies. In the event of a power outage, we have outage tools to provide you with the information you need to navigate through any outage situation. We are here for you. • Customers can report their outage by texting 92887 (WATTS), through our outage map and app https://bit.ly/3VKjigd or by calling 1-800-434-1235. • We update our outage tools every 10 minutes as information comes in from our crews on the ground. Once we assess the damage, we will determine an estimated time of restoration for each outage. Safety is a top priority. Please stay clear of any fallen power lines. If you spot a fallen line, keep at least 10 metres back, even if it does not appear to be live. Report it to 911 and call us at 1-800-434-1235. Visit our tools page for more tips: https://ow.ly/heL550RzBfg #EPWeek2024 #Plan4EverySeason #PreparedON

It was an unusual call with a purrrfect outcome. When Ryan and Kalem responded to a trouble call earlier this month, they discovered a cat perched atop a three-phase pole. The pair isolated and de-energized the circuit to eliminate any potential hazards that could jeopardize the safety of both the cat and crew. We’re happy to report that the cat was successfully rescued from the pole and returned to its grateful owners. “The family was so happy to be reunited with their cat. This was an unusual call for sure, but we were happy to help out.” Daniel, Manager, Kapuskasing Distribution Lines

“When I think about projects like Waasigan, the model really is about collaborating throughout the development phase of the project as partners. Creating space for Indigenous inclusion and input into major decisions so that our projects reflect the input of communities right from the beginning.” ~ Matthew Jackson, Director, Indigenous Relations, Partnerships & Business Development Hydro One Energizing life means more than supplying safe and reliable power, it means partnering to build tomorrow’s infrastructure that supports a clean economy and advances reconciliation. We achieve this by listening and taking actions to meet communities’ needs, and through our industry-leading First Nations equity partnership model. In cooperation with First Nation partners, work is underway to advance this project together, including an environmental assessment, so that we’re ready to support the region’s electricity needs. Rick Putman, a superintendent, distribution lines, knows there is power in numbers. In 2013, he helped develop the Canadian Mutual Assistance agreement that modernized how utilities share resources during large-scale restoration events. This led to the creation of the Ontario Mutual Assistance Group (OnMAG), a North America wide effort that has brought the power back on for countless communities affected by significant and damaging events. This week, Electricity Canada recognized Rick as one of six inaugural winners of the Faces of the Industry award for his outstanding achievements in the electricity sector.   Congratulations, Rick, for your leadership and commitment to drive positive change.
