When a product just isn’t what you or your customers want it to be, you pivot, and make a change. Before we took our Doppstadt® Trommel Screener to the field, we used it to separate one product into two: 5 mm to 15 mm and 40 mm to 60 mm Kendal Stone. This decorative rock has beautiful natural rustic colors. The fines are great to use for walkways and driveways, and the larger stone for above ground decorative landscaping. It is hard to capture the roller coaster of change that took place in 2014. The Black Dirt Company torch was officially handed over by Mr. and Mrs. Dirt Senior to Mr. and Mrs. Dirt Junior. It was bittersweet for them to retire and feel proud of what they had accomplished because of the heartache of letting go of ‘their baby’. It took some time but keeping the business in ‘family’ may have made it a bit easier. Darren and Charlene have taken their role as new owners very seriously as they strive to make them proud and continue with their legacy, not forgetting where the company came from, but ensuring as they grow and transition into a full landscape supply centre, that they develop their identity and purpose which is ‘We cultivate community.’ In Darren’s words: ‘What I love about what I do, is what I get to do with selling dirt.’ We do what we do to support our community – the employees that live in our community, the non-profit organizations that we get to support, partnering with other businesses and organizations, and the fun events we get to be a part of. Cultivating a positive and giving culture within our business and outside our business within the community is something that we work hard at and are proud of. Now in 2024, celebrating 30 years, we are looking forward to the future.
