ICYMI: Over 135 nature lovers converged on the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the ninth annual Bioblitz on Saturday, April 13. Bioblitz drew NC students, expert faculty, and volunteers from the community together to identify and catalogue as many species as possible, from bugs to birds, to amphibians, mammals and plants. Niagara College’s Teaching Distillery has added seven new medals to its growing collection–the most it’s ever won in a single competition. Of the 10 spirits entered into the 2024 Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition last summer, the Distillery earned a gold medal for its Mediterranean Vodka, a silver (and Merit in Terroir) for its Taylor Rosso Vermouth, and bronze medals for its Amaro Sparacci, Tanzanite Gin, School Spirits Vodka, Single Malt and Eastern Hospitality. The career of Niagara College Electronic Engineering Technology and Technician professor Stéfane Filion was celebrated at the Canada Wide Science Fair where Filion took to the stage to accept the 2024 Youth Science Canada Distinguished Service Award. A career that started in high school, Filion earned four gold medals over four years competing at the Canada Wide Science Fair. A one-of-a-kind trailblazing project from Niagara College’s School of Community Services and Heidehof – a well-known seniors care community home in St. Catharines – has been recognized with a provincial industry award for its innovative approach to intergenerational learning and social connection. The project was called, “A Senior’s Freshman Year: The Intergenerational College Experience” where both Niagara College students and seniors attended weekly classes together, engaging in lectures, hands-on activities, and "mentor moments" where seniors shared their life experiences with the students. The Southern Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation (SONAMI) led by Niagara College, has been awarded $266,000 from Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) for year two of its pilot program, further augmenting the capacity of Ontario postsecondary institutions’ innovation and commercialization efforts. “By extending Niagara College’s funding into year two of the IPON pilot, we get the privileged opportunity to continue to lead in supporting manufacturing companies to successfully commercialize their research and associated intellectual property,” said Marc Nantel, PhD, Niagara College’s Vice-President, Research, Innovation & Strategic Enterprises. At our successful Renaissance Gala on April 6, Niagara College announced the largest fundraising campaign in our history to a sold-out crowd of more than 700 business and community leaders and supporters. Calling all nature lovers! The 9th Annual Spring BioBlitz is happening this Saturday, April 13th at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Bioblitz is a free, family-friendly event where citizen scientists explore NC’s campus grounds – a UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve – to identify and catalogue bugs, birds, amphibians, mammals and plants. Volunteers will come together with the common goal of identifying as many species as possible to create a baseline for researchers and the local community to monitor biodiversity over time.
