Weekly Message from the Board President
Happy Passover! Tonight is the first night of Passover, and we’re holding our Seder at the Synagogue. Registration begins at 5:30 and the Seder starts at 6.
Rabbi Halfon will not be conducting the Seder. The Rabbi got sick over the weekend and will not be able to make it. He’s recovering well and sends everyone his best wishes. The Board of Directors decided last week against publicly broadcasting the Seder over Zoom. However, we will be setting things up so the Rabbi can watch the Seder remotely.
Sisterhood and volunteers have been hard at work preparing all of the food. We’re expecting a wonderful feast, plus lots of singing, sharing the story of Pesach, and more.
For the next 8 days, Chametz will be off the menu, so no bread, rolls, pizza, and anything that has been made with leavening. But then… we’ll welcome back Chametz with our Chametz party. It will take place on Wednesday, May 1st, at 5:30 PM (it was set a little early so that kids could attend). Our Chametz party has usually meant pizza of different varieties, and beer, along with soft drinks for the kids.
So come celebrate Passover tonight, and then join us for our Chametz party on May 1st.
Rabbi Halfon will be leading services this Saturday morning, starting at 10 AM. It will be a special Shabbat service because it falls during Passover. The service will be on Zoom. The Zoom call will begin at 9:30. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81877093995 Meeting ID: 818 7709 3995.
Rabbi Halfon has had lots of visitors to help him through his illness. Last week, the Board of Directors created a Caring Committee. The idea behind it was our Misheberach list. At just about every service, we read the names of people who are ill or could use our prayers, followed by the prayer for healing. The Caring Committee, made up of volunteers, is going to reach out to people on the list and see if there is any help we could provide. Do they need help with errands, maybe a ride to a doctor or to pick up a prescription, or food, or anything else while they recover from whatever is causing concern. It’s part of being in our family. If someone his hurting, we want to help.
Several board members immediately stepped up to volunteer to serve on the committee, but we want to open it up to you. It would mean calling someone on our Misheberach list, and seeing how they are doing and if they need anything. Please reply to his newsletter or contact the Synagogue office if you would like to help.
For several years, the Endowment Fund raised money by offering the sponsorship of chairs in the sanctuaries in our Synagogue. Plaques would be placed on chairs with the name of the person being honored. The Endowment Fund would like to honor two people in our community with chairs. Dr. Harlan Ribnik passed away a few weeks ago. He was a long time member of our Synagogue and a strong supporter. Dr. Ribnik made significant donations to the Mt. Sinai Trust every month for years, along with other gifts and support. We would like to thank him by sponsoring a chair in his name.
Tim Solon is another longtime supporter of our Synagogue. He spent many years working with Dorothy Feldman on our Mt. Sinai Library, and still attends services frequently. If you would like to donate to provide a chair for either Harlan Ribnik or Tim Solon, please use our website or contact the Synagogue office. Money donated to the Endowment or Trust is never spent. It is invested, and a small portion of the interest is used by the Synagogue.
Here’s our Yiddish Phrase of the Week:
A leyb hot nit moyre far keyn flig.
A lion is not afraid of a fly.
Shalom,
Dave Lerner
