What is the Alberta Responsible Mining Initiative?

The Alberta Responsible Mining Initiative and Responsiblemining.ca is an effort by the metallurgical coal industry to explain why mining matters, inform readers about modern mining techniques and illustrate the priority and practices of industry in protecting our land and water.  Education is the singular purpose of the site.  The intent is to provide facts about mining and the met coal resource, to dispel outdated perceptions of the industry and to inform the dialogue on what has become a widely discussed issue in Alberta.

The Responsible Mining Initiative does not advocate for individual mining projects, nor will it ever do so.  The website is also in no way intended to influence public policy development by the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada.  The sole purpose of Responsiblemining.ca is to provide facts and information to Albertans interested in learning about metallurgical coal development.  All those involved in creating, operating, and keeping the website up to date have committed to education as its sole objective.

Responsible Mining does not represent a single entity nor is it a tool to campaign for policy changes or project approvals.  All those involved with the initiative recognize and accept that individual projects will be evaluated based on their own merits through review by federal and provincial regulators.

As supporters of metallurgical coal for steel production and responsible developers of mineral assets, we see a generational opportunity to work with Albertans, First Nations, and other stakeholders to build a domestic industry that meets a growing global need for steel, while upholding strict environmental standards protecting our land, water, and air.

If you have questions about the metallurgical coal industry and the information found on responsiblemining.ca we encourage you to reach out at connect@responsiblemining.ca

Questions regarding individual proposed projects should be sent to the individual project proponent.
