Bashaw Township, T38N-R13W, is located in the southwestern part of Washburn County between Shell Lake and Spooner. It covers approximately 34 square miles, with a population of 1079 residents. Its roots are deeply seated in the history of Washburn County. With the organization and separation from Burnett County in 1877, Washburn County was created and made up of two townships: Veazie to the north and Bashaw to the south. In later years both were divided into the current 21 townships.
In the early years, Bashaw was primarily a lumbering and farming community. Lumbering has become incidental and most of the small family farms are no longer in operation.
Bashaw offers many recreational opportunities. Fishing: Tozer Lake, Little Long Lake and Sawyer Creek are all accessible to the public. Hunting: Sawyer Creek DNR Wildlife Area contains over 700 acres of public hunting land. The town offers access to the Wild River ATV trail as well as various snowmobile trails.
