ArcelorMittal has started the construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) for long products at its Gijón plant, which is expected to produce its first heat in the first quarter of 2026. This investment of €213 million will be the first major EAF project to be implemented within the company’s decarbonisation programme in Europe and will constitute the first step towards low-carbon emissions steelmaking in Asturias. Great to see our long-term partner LanzaTech featured in The Wall Street Journal recently. We started working with LanzaTech on a carbon capture project back in 2015. That project became the European steel industry's first ever carbon capture and re-use facility, inaugurated at our steel plant in Ghent, Belgium in late 2022. We've also made a significant investment in LanzaTech through our #XCarbInnovationFund. As Irina Gorbounova, head of the innovation fund, says, LanzaTech's gas fermentation technology can reduce a steel plants carbon emissions while ‘producing valuable products from our carbon bearing gases which can help the decarbonisation of other sectors.’ #smartersteels #climateaction #carboncapture #decarbonisation

Today sees the release of our Q1 financial results. Commenting our CEO Aditya Mittal said: “Across the Company our people are galvanized to improve safety performance. The 3rd party safety audit, which started at the end of December, is now well underway and on target to be completed in September. We expect this to make valuable recommendations that, combined with the considerable efforts already underway, will enable us to deliver the safety results we are striving for. “On financial performance, the improved pricing environment combined with recovering volumes resulted in sequentially stronger quarterly results, which also now reflect the value contributed by our joint ventures. “We have an exciting pipeline of growth projects underway, including the 1GW renewables project in India and Vega CMC in Brazil, both of which are expected to commence operations in the first half. Meanwhile the strategic stake in Vallourec will enhance our exposure to the attractive North American market in the value-added tubular market. We continue to progress with our decarbonization projects, conscious of the need to ensure these investments create value as well as reduce emissions. “Maintaining our position as the lead supplier of low carbon steels is a clear priority and the planned ramp-up at Sestao, along with the new EAF in Gijon which will break ground imminently, will both have an important role to play. Meanwhile our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel will be on show to the world during the Paris Olympics, in both the Olympic and Paralympic torches and also the Spectacular which will be erected on the Eiffel Tower. “Although overall economic sentiment remains subdued, we expect apparent steel demand ex-China to grow between +3% and +4% this year and are well positioned to benefit from this improvement.” Read the full results https://lnkd.in/d3WvtbTd

The safety and wellbeing of our colleagues is our uppermost priority and the most important aspect of our purpose to create smarter steels for people and planet. Aligned with Health and Safety Day 2024, we have launched ‘Believe in Zero’, a new, long-term internal communications campaign designed to engage, inspire and educate employees, make them think about health and safety at all times and most importantly, to make a positive contribution to our ambition to be a fatality-free and serious accident-free business. There are many ways in which to become a zero fatality and zero serious injury company, but they all start with belief. Belief is of course not enough by itself. It needs to be supported by rigour, hard work and commitment, every single day. Find out more https://lnkd.in/dx6XVpH5

☀️ We’re on a (#Magnelis®) roll! As all good things come in threes, we’re proud to announce a unique collaboration between 1️⃣ ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, 2️⃣ KS Service Center, and 3️⃣ Van der Valk Solar Systems. Together, they're creating sustainable solar panel mounting systems available in Europe. Curious to know how? 👉 https://lnkd.in/eu-BWP6V These systems are produced using Magnelis® coated steel sourced with our accompanying #XCarb® green steel certificates. The entire production chain, from transportation to processing, is powered by renewable energy sources, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy solutions. This collaboration aims to achieve an 82.2% reduction in carbon emissions for creating these PV mounting structures. 💯The steel is transported to KS Service Center using electric vehicles wherever possible. It is processed by KS Service Center, and their chain partner KS Systems, using machines that are powered by 100% renewable electricity. 📸 Corné Rottier (Managing Director – KS Service Center), Gregory Rombaut (Sales and Marketing Manager – KS Service Center), Paul van der Meer Valk Solar Systems), Milou van der Ven (Digital Marketeer - Van der Valk Solar Systems), Erik den Hoedt (Accountmanager – ArcelorMittal), Mathieu Suijkerbuijk (Project Manager – KS Sytems), Koos Vlak (Export Director – KS Systems) 📸
