As in any collecting category, it is important to buy the best you can afford.“With Heritage’s array of auctions, including the May 16 Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu Signature Auction, you can develop your connoisseurship by paying attention to craftsmanship and condition. Attend silver previews to handle pieces, study the period and maker to understand rarity, and consider the provenance of each piece,” Karen Rigdon, Vice President of Fine Silver & Decorative Arts. Given the material’s rich history, we asked Rigdon, for her expert insight on navigating the world of decorative silver collecting. To learn more about the historied art of loving and collecting fine silver, head to this edition of our Intelligent Collector magazine: https://lnkd.in/gFaUCkN7 Featured piece: A John C. Moore & Son Silver Epergne Centerpiece for Tiffany & Co., New York, circa 1865 (Lot #74114) #HeritageAuctions #finesilver #decorativeart #artcollection #artcollector

The original USS Enterprise has completed its voyage home. On April 13, Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena returned the 3-foot-long model of the Federation’s flagship, used in the original Star Trek series’ opening credits, to Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry Jr., son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and caretaker of his father’s legacy. Last fall, an individual discovered the long-lost model and brought it to Heritage for authentication. Heritage then reached out to Roddenberry Jr. to coordinate the return of the Enterprise. “Once our team of experts concluded it was the real thing, we contacted Rod because we wanted to get the model back to where it belonged,” Maddalena says. “We’re thrilled the Enterprise is finally in dry dock." There’s something in the American Southwest that not only has called out to generations of artists but also has enabled some of the greatest American and European painters to ascend to the realm of visionary. Agnes Pelton sought and found her ultimate place in the desert town of Cathedral City, California, in the early 1930s. In Pelton's chosen landscape, she became one of the most influential and inspirational painters of the last century. Agnes Pelton’s Purple Star Icon, featured in the May 15th American Art Signature Auction,z emerges as an exceptional piece among her rare transcendental abstractions. Only four of her Desert Transcendental paintings – her most iconic and sought-after works – have graced the auction block in the last 29 years, and this larger and pristine variant of her historicized Purple Star Icon was until now known only through archival records.
