You've heard of "Mean Tweets." But have you heard of "Compliment Texts"? The 2024 theme for Mental Health Week is #CompassionConnects. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, compassion has the capacity to heal. Alberta Blue Cross employees embraced the challenge and sent their colleagues notes of encouragement and kindness. Even the smallest compliment can make the biggest difference in someone's day. Pay it forward, today and every day! Join us May 6 to 12 to explore how compassion connects us all: https://lnkd.in/egekvn9J Canadian Mental Health Association

Meet Sundas Shamshad, one of our 2023 Faces of Wellness finalists. After fighting breast cancer at a young age, Sundas noticed her city was missing resources and supports for people like her. She founded the only cancer support group in Fort McMurray—Sisters in Cancer. This support group offers peer-to-peer programs, alongside financial and mental health aids, for cancer patients. Sundas is also an advisory board member for EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living well (EXCEL). Her work helps support cancer patients and survivors through mental, physical and emotional aids. Moose Hide Campaign Day is May 16. This Indigenous-led, grassroots movement engages men and boys in ending gender-based violence. Moose Hide Campaign Day unites people across Canada in a day of ceremony and reconciliation for a cause that disproportionately affects women and children. Those who want to support the Moose Hide Campaign can wear a moose hide pin. For more information or to order pins, visit https://lnkd.in/gthvhhYK

Building resilient communities through emergency preparedness and communications

It’s one of the most wonderful times of the year in emergency management. National Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week)  runs May 5 to 11. This year’s theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. EP Week can be used as an opportunity to build more resilient communities and increase Albertans’ risk awareness by identifying local hazards and sharing tips on how they can prepare. The Be Prepared program can support you with the following resources (all available at www.alberta.ca/epweek): EP Week webpage: Tools and resources to help you participate in the annual campaign. EP Week Toolkit: Includes ideas and information to support campaign planning and a selection of communications you can copy and use. Test of the National Emergency Alerting System: Use the test alert to teach your community about being ready for an emergency before and after the alert is issued on May 8th at 11:55 a.m. National Test Alert Day Guide: Download the guide for activities you can use to increase disaster risk literacy in classrooms and other settings. Resources for your community: Library of public education materials featuring translated resources. We will also share a new Prompting Preparedness message every day during campaign week, available here: https://lnkd.in/giUpt8yN EP Week is a reminder that preparedness isn’t just about being ready for the next big disaster. It’s about making preparedness a part of our routines so we are able to navigate disruptions, big or small.

On May 5, we recognize Red Dress Day. Also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), this day of collective mourning is about honouring the memories of the thousands of MMIWG2S in Canada. Many families have never received answers or justice for the loss of their loved ones, so this day is also a call to action to address systemic issues perpetuating this tragedy.
