The Alberta Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Team has a new ‘paw-tner’! In March, the team received a donation of a robotic dog. Casey, who is named after the generous donor, will be a helpful tool to assist our youngest patients in their recovery. “This could be a really good motivator for patients,” says Child Life Specialist Jackie Pearson. “We often have children in the hospital that need to get out of bed and practice walking again, perhaps after a surgery or procedure. We're starting to think that the dog might be a great addition to getting them up and moving around.” Made possible by Casey Mallat at Leading Edge Developments, Casey the dog joins the Child Life Team’s MEDi, another interactive robot designed to assist in therapeutic interventions at ACH.

For years, eligible Albertans with swallowing disorders in the esophagus were referred out of province for non-surgical treatments. Fortunately, patients can now access a minimally invasive procedure closer to home thanks to a collaborative approach to treatment performed by a gastroenterologist and thoracic surgeon at hospitals in Edmonton and Calgary. Edmonton resident Aumer Aasaf was scheduled in Vancouver for a peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in January but cancelled when he was offered the opportunity to be the second patient to receive the treatment at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. For years, food had become trapped in his esophagus because the muscles wouldn’t relax. Coughing and choking had become the norm for any meal, and his nights were plagued by insomnia due to choking. Aasaf says he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in more than five years until his overnight stay in the hospital after the procedure. “It was the best sleep I had in years... My quality of life has skyrocketed.”

No words can explain the heartbreak that comes from losing a child. For Karter’s parents, they refused to let him pass away for no reason; they wanted their tragedy to help others. Karter’s parents donated his brain and tumors to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) research, and his heart valves were donated to the AHS Comprehensive Tissue Centre. Karter’s heart valves saved two babies who had heart defects. This extremely difficult decision can provide families with some comfort and peace, knowing their loved one lives on through the lives they’ve saved. Continue reading at https://lnkd.in/ejcn5MaC

“Embrace the power of administrative professionals, for we are the architects of success in every organization.” Carol Walsh, executive assistant to AHS’ senior medical officer of health and senior medical director, Dr. Laura McDougall, is a founding member of the Achieving Administrative Excellence (AAE) Community of Practice – a unique resource for administrative professionals at AHS that fosters continuous growth and collaboration within the profession. “The community of practice was established nearly five years ago in response to a call from organizational leaders wishing to build a capable, competent and confident administrative professionals’ workforce,” explains Walsh. Tasked with identifying and addressing gaps within the system, the group focuses on educational opportunities for administrative professionals. They offer access to an orientation and resource hub with essential tools and guidance for skill enhancement and professional development and provide three progressive certification programs designed to empower members in their roles. “This community is truly a well-needed resource for admins at AHS,” says Zoe De Luca, member of the AAE Community Practice. “It offers support, recognition, and empowerment to help us thrive in our careers and contribute to the success of the organization.” “Through our community of practice, we've demonstrated that administrative professionals are not just support staff – we are the backbone of organizational excellence,” says Walsh. “Our role extends far beyond traditional tasks, encompassing vital competencies and expertise that drive innovation, collaboration, and efficiency. De Luca is also an executive associate on the Infection Prevention and Control team, and she sees her biggest reward is the impact made by working with and supporting the admins within their program. “I am incredibly fortunate to work alongside the administrative professionals in my team, whose expertise, knowledge, and dedication consistently inspire me,” says De Luca. “Our impact is undeniable, even when our contributions are primarily behind the scenes.” Today is Administrative Professionals Day and we’d like to say ‘thank you’ to our administrative professionals, like Carol and Zoe, who help keep AHS running smoothly.

Sixteenth birthdays are usually celebrated with family, friends, and maybe even a driving test. Zachary didn’t get to celebrate his 16th, but his organ recipients celebrate him. Trimm’s road test was scheduled for his 16th birthday in 2022. Instead, after a devastating dirt-biking injury, he donated his organs that day, saving five lives. “He had asked me, ‘Are you a donor?’,” explains Zachary’s mother. “He knew that going in to get his licence that was going to be asked of him. He said, ‘Absolutely. I want to be an organ donor’… having that conversation with Zachary made the donation decision his.” James Gospodyn was one of the people he saved. “I believe that what we leave behind is our legacy and a large part of that legacy can be helping those in need. It gave me a great deal of closure to know what kind of person he was, and it means a lot to me to know his family. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about him.” “To us, organ donation was a very clear representation of who he was,” Zachary’s mother adds. “It’s a very meaningful way for him to continue to live on – and make a difference in others’ lives.” Continue reading at https://lnkd.in/gQQ6RY8u

As part of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, AHS is launching a new campaign to encourage Albertans to talk with their loved ones about their donation decisions. The light-hearted ads aim to normalize discussions about end-of-life donation and spark conversation. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and a tissue donor can save or dramatically improve lives for up to 75 people. While Alberta marked another record year – with 273 organ and tissue donors in 2023 — there are almost 300 people waiting for life-saving transplants in our province. Last year, nearly 50 people on the waitlist died. Albertans can register their intent to donate online at GiveLifeAlberta.ca or in person at a motor vehicle registry office. Please tell loved ones about your decision. https://lnkd.in/gA8wzP3R #NOTDAW
