When Monica Grover's father was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), the diagnosis weighed heavily on her family and seeped into the cultural fabric of their lives as Indian Americans. They found themselves combating stigma and lack of understanding around dementia. As his disease progressed, Monica stepped into a new role as her father’s caregiver. She is among the 25% of dementia caregivers who identify as a sandwich generation caregiver–providing care for an elderly parent and at least one child. "Juggling the responsibilities of caring for my father and two children became an overwhelming challenge… Realizing the limitations of my caregiving abilities, I began to research alternate elder care options." Monica struggled to find affordable care options that suited her family’s budget and her father’s needs. “The lack of guidance left me feeling more isolated and confused than when I began this journey.” That’s when she turned to the Alzheimer’s Association. “The Alzheimer’s Association became my lifeline; it emerged as an indispensable source of support, connecting me to experienced counselors, research and education.” Equipped with the information and resources she needed, Monica was able to find the right long-term care solution for her father. By sharing her personal experience, Monica hopes to ignite conversations about dementia care issues, including cultural sensitivities, cost of care and care navigation. Thank you, Monica, for telling your story and empowering others along the way. #AAPIMonth

Five years ago, Summer Schwedes’ mom, Cathy, was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 47. Summer was only 13. Her mom lost the ability to work, drive, complete daily tasks, comprehend instructions, maintain conversation and now struggles to dress herself. “It's hard to explain the heartbreak of missing someone who is still with you daily.” Summer turned her grief into action by becoming a passionate supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association, participating in both Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Ride to End ALZ. Showing up for the cause is a priority for her; this year Summer participated in Ride on the same day as her senior prom! “Although my mom ignited my passion to join the movement, my spark continues to burn through the urgent need to prevent future families from suffering from this horrific disease.” Summer believes we can all make a difference by telling our stories. “Sharing my story, showing both strength and vulnerability, I receive as much inspiration as I give.” This #MothersDay we share our appreciation for Summer and all those fighting to #ENDALZ in honor of their mothers.

Rob Johnson’s Grandma Betty had a television with a VCR attached to it and only two movies; one of them was “Happy Gilmore.” As a little boy, it was Rob’s favorite film to watch with his grandma. In 2017, Rob lost Grandma Betty to Alzheimer’s. To honor her and their shared love of “Happy Gilmore,” Rob started the Find Your Happy Place Golf Outing. The golf event raises funds and awareness to fight Alzheimer’s through #TheLongestDay. Just like Adam Sandler’s Happy, Rob plays golf for his grandma. Over the past five years, Rob has raised over $73,000 through the event. This year he is hoping to raise $30,000, his highest fundraising goal yet. Thank you, Rob, for turning your passion into purpose! #NationalGolfDay
