“Because I have sickle cell, I am much more likely to match — in terms of a blood donor — with someone who is from the same ethnic background as me” - Charles In this video, Charles and Visaree discuss the importance of ethnic diversity in blood donation and why more Black donors are needed while Visaree gives a lifesaving donation. In Canada, blood transfusion is one of the few treatments available to people living with sickle cell disease. At times, regular red blood cell exchanges are required, and may occur every four to six weeks—for life. Hence, people living with sickle cell disease are likely to have better outcomes if they receive blood from people with similar ethnicity. Since blood types are inherited, having a donor base that is ethnically diverse improves the chances that people of all ethnicities will find a close match. We need the donor pool to be as big and diverse as possible. If you’re 17 or older, find out if you’re eligible to donate today (and encourage your friends and family to do the same). As we wrap up Mental Health Week, Canadian Blood Services would like to thank all the employees who took part in our various wellness activities throughout the week. Employee well-being is a priority, and we offer many resources to ensure our teams have access to supports at work and at home. This week we invited staff to take part in virtual wellness events; get in touch with their creative side with watercolour painting sessions; and treated them to healthy snacks while learning about our many well-being offerings.

Today, Canadian Blood Services delivered an apology to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across Canada for the harms experienced by gay, bi, queer, Two-Spirit, and trans people, and other members of the broader community, because of a former donor eligibility policy. This apology is a necessary step in our ongoing journey to make our policies and processes, and all interactions with Canadian Blood Services more inclusive for diverse 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Learn more about the apology and our commitment to increasing 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in Canada’s Lifeline at blood.ca/apology

National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW) takes place April 21-27. It’s an opportunity to recognize those who have donated to save others, and celebrate those who have received lifesaving transplants. It’s also a time to inspire Canadians to learn about organ and tissue donation, talk to their families about their decisions and register their intent to become organ and tissue donors. You can learn more about organ and tissue donation here: blood.ca/organs-tissues

This National Volunteer Week (Apr. 14-20, 2024), we’re thrilled to celebrate our volunteers and partners and thank them for their support. Trinity (second from left) recruits young people to join the stem cell registry, increasing the odds that people who need a stem cell transplant can find a suitable match.
