  • We have received several questions in recent days regarding the sewage treatment facility effluent at the Chalk River Laboratories. We would like to provide you with the latest information on our response to the situation. To begin, the discharge from the sewage treatment facility does not pose a threat to the environment or the public. CNL can also confirm that this non-compliance is not related to radiological contaminants. The current focus of the investigation is on detergents or cleaning solutions used within the laboratories. The performance of the facility has been improving, and over the last two weeks this has been supported with positive test results. We will need another month of positive test results in order to declare that the sewage facility has returned to consistent normal operation. We appreciate that our previous disclosure, and the ensuing media coverage, may have caused public concern. This was not our intention and we apologise for any concern it may have caused. Again, the discharge from the sewage treatment facility does not pose a threat to the environment or the public. For additional background information please visit https://lnkd.in/gpZjaWGY

  • Exciting news! We are preparing for our 119th demolition at CRL. Our decommissioning team is removing hazards and isolating electrical and mechanical services in a two-story wood-framed building that was once used as office space and a change room for CNL employees who performed radiological work. The demolition will begin later this year and over 5,000 square feet of building footprint will be removed.

  • One of our key missions is to restore and protect the environment. One of our current projects includes groundwater and soil sampling at a legacy work site that will be restored. The site has a long history of use beginning in 1944, the most notable being that it was part of the work camp where workers who built many of the original facilities at CRL lived from 1944 to 1950. Later, it was used as a landfill from approximately 1960 to 1972. After the landfill closed, the area was covered with fill material and used for the storage of electrical equipment and road salt until early 2010. Following industry best practices, our Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation team drilled 16 boreholes and collected 70 soil samples to assess the soil quality at the site. Using a low-flow sampling methodology, a peristaltic pump collected groundwater samples at a rate of 100-200 mL/minute from eight monitoring wells. Once the samples are analyzed, the data will be used to develop a remediation plan for the area.

  • This #Earthweek, we were happy to host Centre scolaire catholique Jeanne-Lajoie, pavillon secondaires for a tour of some Environmental Research Facilities at our Chalk River Site. The students were immersed in our site's incredible biodiversity, gaining a firsthand understanding of how CNL's monitoring and protection efforts contribute to our environment's health. This experience underscored the practical importance of our work. If you are you interested in a CNL tour for your class, please email communications@cnl.ca.
