From childhood creations to adulthood masterpieces, Electric Operations Supervisor Monte Simmonds, has a long-standing affinity for building things. His role in substation construction requires meticulousness, but his passion for precision and detail doesn’t stop at work. What started as a boom truck model, inspired by his own work vehicle, is now a comprehensive model of a 138 kV transmission dead-end substation, complete with a six-man crew replacing damaged insulators on a line switch. Originally built in 1987, Monte has updated the model over the years. Construction included everyday items ranging from picture hanger wire to earring backs and took over 300 hours to complete. Originally housed in a training facility at our South Houston Service Center, the detailed model has captivated generations of employees with its intricacies and depiction of historical work practices. “As you look at the model there are details that are always being discovered, such as the tower lacing having the actual lacing number marked on it,” said Monte. “I watched people look at it and point out details to each other. That is its purpose, to engage the viewer.” Employed with the company since 1982, Monte is a few years away from retirement and generously donated the model to the Technical Training Department at the recently unveiled state-of-the-art Hiram O. Clarke training facility. “I saw Monte’s model for the first time about 10 years ago and was blown away by the craftmanship, details and accuracy that he captured in the display,” said Jason Grier, CUSP, Manager, Technical Training. “We are honored to house it at our flagship training center for all to see and appreciate for generations to come.” We’re thankful for Monte’s gift that will allow many more to admire the display that celebrates our company’s legacy.
