Each year, lives are needlessly lost on roadways because of alcohol, drugs and distracted-impaired driving. These are preventable tragedies. Consistent with the “Vision Zero Brantford” simple and clear goal of zero fatalities or serious injuries on city roadways, we are proud to support SAID Day, May 16, 2024 - a student led broad-based school, business, and community effort to raise awareness of and prevent impaired and distracted driving. Brantford City Hall will be illuminated in blue today, May 14, to recognize Apraxia Awareness Day to raise awareness of this challenging speech disorder that affects nearly 1 in 1,000 children. Children with apraxia of speech will not learn to speak without frequent, intensive and appropriate speech therapy. Our highest respect goes to children with childhood apraxia of speech, and to their families for their effort, determination and resilience in the face of obstacles.

When you think of an old-fashioned telephone, you’ll likely picture this week’s Telephone Friday model. The “Daffodil” telephone, so called because of its resemblance to the flower, became a popular set in 1910. Incidentally, Brantford’s official flower is the daffodil thanks to this telephone! Stay tuned each week for a look back at different telephone models throughout history, some hopefully stirring up sentimental memories for you. Join us this summer as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the invention of the telephone with a weekend of FREE events from Friday, July 26 to Sunday July 28.
