Construction has started on Blatchford Fire Station #8. Located at 8603 Flying Club Road NW, this new station will replace West Yellowhead Fire Station #8, which is being demolished as part of the Yellowhead Freeway Conversion Project. This three-bay, 1,500 square-metre fire station will be emissions neutral and will connect to Blatchford’s district energy sharing system, which provides environmentally friendly heating, cooling and domestic hot water. Construction of Blatchford Fire Station #8 is anticipated to be complete in winter 2026. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services will continue to provide timely fire rescue services in the surrounding areas. Fire Station #8 resources and equipment have been temporarily redeployed to Lauderdale Fire Station #10. Learn more about fire station construction and revitalization at https://lnkd.in/gvaEDDMm

If you have to work on a Sunday for a community-based meeting, the best place to meet is the Edmonton Valley Zoo Otter Room! Though, you will be distracted at least once or twice in said meeting because the otters (including the babies!) are out and playing 😊 There are many city facilities with spaces that are bookable for meetings, gatherings and events - and it’s always nice to get out of the traditional office space. This is a picture of my old dog Maddie up to her awesome canine arm pits in dry vegetation in a boreal forest. Why would I post this on LinkedIn? Because the photo is full of information about wildland and interface fires if you know what to look for. There are lots of 'its too early' posts out there right now referring to the fires in northwest Canada. The worst of these posts are using this statement to spread fear, misinformation, and unfounded accusations that arson must be to blame. The thing is, It's not too early. Spring is a very dangerous time in the boreal forest. There is a great deal of dead organic matter on the ground, and it cannot retain moisture, because its dead, no matter how much it rains or how much it snowed the previous winter. 'Green Up', which improves conditions by allowing the groundcover to retain moisture comes later at northern latitudes and is based largely on daylight hours. Spring also brings warmer temperatures, low humidity and winds are common. Also, all those Aspen trees are sucking up every drop from the shallow organic layers so they can leaf out. In low snow years like this year, the problem is made worse, and even worse if spring isn't very consistently wet. When you roll in fires that burn all winter (that is a real thing and always has been), lots of human activity (recreation and industry) and a legacy of forest fire suppression leading to too many old forests, and a pine beetle outbreak leaving swaths of dead pine trees you get.......here. Of course a changing climate that is warmer and drier makes all of these factors worse. Maddie isn't around anymore, because things never stay the same in nature...and the forest is no exception. It is not too early. Spread the word. Do your part to prevent and report, and if the worst happens near you, support your local and provincial emergency services.
