A Living Tribute Odessa Fire Rescue gathered at Firehouse 6 this morning to dedicate a living tribute to a member of their fire family. Sean McKinnis, son of Odessa Fire Rescue Engineer David McKinnis, lost his battle with Muscular Dystrophy on April 19, 2005 at the age of 20. At the time of his passing, a tree was planted in his memory at the old Firehouse 6, where his father served our community. David, a member of Odessa Fire Rescue for 30 years, passed away in October of 2020. Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton said they intended to move the tree to the new Firehouse 6 on Penbrook Street when service began in 2022, but it was too large to move. On this Arbor Day, a holiday that encourages people to plant trees and embrace nature, a new one was planted with a dedication plaque to share the enduring spirit of Sean for years to come. OFR thanks Aldridge Gardens in Midland for their kind donation of the tree for this memorial. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud #Firefighters #tribute

An “official” celebration! TxDOT held a ribbon cutting today for the overpass at Loop 338 and Yukon Road. “This is one of the most deadly intersections that we had so it’s so rewarding to finally see it come together,” Odessa City Council Member Denise Swanner said. “This overpass is going to go a long way in helping to prevent those types of accidents,” Odessa City Council Member Mark Matta said. Our local leaders say this has been an item at the top of their list. “The council has prioritized five other overpasses on 338 to make sure that we end up having a true loop around the City of Odessa,” Odessa City Council Member Steve Thompson said. “This is going to help a lot and that way we can keep these big trucks out of the city of Odessa and save our roads inside our city limits.” The Mayor also gave a perspective of some more good news that it means for the city. “And open up strategic areas of the land mass that are out here that’s ready and available for development,” Odessa Mayor Javier Joven said. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud Javier Joven Denise Swanner Odessa Chamber of Commerce Texas Department of Transportation

Mother/Daughter Business Partners Maribel Morales Caballero worked her way up! She’s held all kinds of positions such as a dishwasher, grocery store cashier and sales in a solar energy company and clothing stores. That hard work laid the foundation for her future and eventually led her to partner with her daughter, Glorialy. They established their own business called "Xerox Envios y Copias." Their business offers a range of services including copying, money transfers faxing, printing, scanning, laminating, bill payments and check cashing. Glorialy also helps clients with personal and business tax procedures, notary services, home sale or rental contracts, LLC business formation, reports and more. As a team, Maribel and Glorialy work diligently to serve their expanding clientele. They acknowledge the effort required to open a business, understanding that every sacrifice has its reward. Setting up the business prompted them to seek out the necessary technology to protect their clients identities. Maribel's sister is also an accountant and an important part of the business. They believe their unity will lead them to the success they aspire to achieve. ''Xerox Envios & Copias'' 📍9033 W. University ☎️(432) 225-0009 knightGC77@icloud.com ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud

Discover Odessa It’s easy to promote a city you absolutely LOVE! Laura Marts moved to Odessa 17 years ago. She was just named the Director of Discover Odessa which promotes tourism. Laura has had an exciting career. She spent four years working at the Odessa Police Department in records and as a clerk with the Narcotics Detectives. The Odessan also worked in the oilfield. Before coming to Discover Odessa, she worked at VisitMidland which promotes tourism for our sister city. “I believe the fact that I had a great understanding of the job gave me a unique opportunity and advantage. It’s a niche field and I love it!” Laura said. She has a proven track record and it’s evident she truly cares about those around her. “Helping people feel welcome is something I’ve always enjoyed and that’s what Discover Odessa does, welcomes people to our city,” Laura said. On a more personal note, Laura is married to Odessa Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Ben Marts and they have a young son. ✅BrighterFuture #OdessaProud Discover Odessa

Seismic Testing in the Odessa Area Dawson Geophysical has been contracted to carry out a seismic test that will soon be conducted in the area. The test generates 3D images of the earth’s layers using sound waves. The company explains it does not cause damage to property and is similar to an x-ray. Dawson has acquired the permits needed to place the equipment in the area. It will be placed in the right of ways near the road. So, you may see the recording devices along the curb or alleyways near your home. It is a small yellow recording device. During the test, vibe buggies will move through the area and occasionally lower a vibrating mechanism. With that, you could feel the vibration. After testing is complete, the equipment will be removed. The City of Odessa has no role in this testing, it only provided permission for it to be done. Dawson wants to assure citizens the company has been doing this for 70 years and there is no harm to the environment, people, pets or property. The equipment will be in place for up to four weeks. If you have any questions or need the equipment temporarily moved for yard maintenance, contact Dawson at (432)556-9295.
