About us

Contemporary Calgary provides Calgary and its visitors with a significant visual arts destination dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The former Centennial Planetarium, itself a significant work of brutalist architecture, is a world-class gallery where we deliver outstanding local, national and international contemporary art programming. As a young and ambitious institution, we uphold the values that make us a welcoming, inclusive, engaging and relevant space that is expansive in its representation of artists and ideas. We exhibit art and offer arts related programming because: We believe that art can foster conversation and encourage the exploration of new ideas and critical thinking. We believe in the power of art to transform the places and the lives we live. We share a passion for art that is relevant, meaningful, and challenging. We share a passion for Calgary as a global city of choice. With recent exhibitions that include ground-breaking contemporary names like Yoko Ono, Robert Houle, Chitra Ganesh, Diane Arbus and Marman and Borins, the Gallery plays a central role in Canada’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of Calgary’s growing contemporary art quarter. In the spirit of respect and truth, Contemporary Calgary acknowledges the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We also acknowledge that Contemporary Calgary’s building is situated on land immediately adjacent to the Bow River that has shaped this land and its people for generations.

Step into a world where the feminine form intertwines with natural environments, both real and imagined with Winnie Truong’s exhibition Curious Nature 🌿 Experience Truong's captivating dioramas, new sculptural forms, stop motion animations, and a site-specific wall installation 🎨🌺 Venture beyond the conventional static image as Truong's work evolves the medium of drawing, teasing the limits of scale and space for a fully immersive viewing experience. Truong’s work provides the imaginary viewpoint of a feminist natural historian from another realm, one who undertakes their labour with great detail and care to depict the part-flora, part-creature figures by observing them in their natural environments devoid of the male presence or familiar social or biological guidelines. As these unashamed subjects shun the viewer’s gaze; they are given their own notions of agency, beauty, sensuality and purpose. These figures are seen contorted, frolicking, consuming, nurturing, conquering, and entangled in environments where you are unsure where limb ends and leaf begins. 🍃 Installation view, Winnie Truong: Curious Nature. Explore Anton Ginzburg's Yerevan series, where artistry meets algorithm to encapsulate the essence of Armenia's capital city 🖌️🏙️ Ginzburg's Yerevan paintings, born from a six-month exploration of the city, employ algorithms to generate intricate geometric structures that form the core of each composition. Capturing the architectural marvels and daily encounters of Yerevan, these artworks serve as a visual diary of Ginzburg's experience. By intertwining technology with subjective interpretation, he creates a dialogue between precision and personal expression. Anton Ginzburg: Surface is on view in the Morris & Ann Dancyger Observatory Gallery until June 16, 2024 🌐✨ Installation view, Anton Ginzburg: Surface. March 13—June 16, 2024, Contemporary Calgary. May 12—Perspective Film Series Presents: Beirut the Encounter (1981), directed by Borhane Alaouié Get tickets 🔗 https://bit.ly/3xR3D4Q Beirut, 1977, two years into the Lebanese Civil War. Zeina (Nadine Acoury) and Haidar (Haitham El Amine) are former university friends who lost touch as Beirut was broken into two halves during the war. When telephone communication is restored between the East and West sides of the city, they attempt to see one another one last time before Zeina moves to the US. The promise of an encounter transforms into poignant confessions to an absent other, with each side of the city trying, in vain, to be heard by the other. Beirut the Encounter (1981) was restored in 2018 from the original negative by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium – CINEMATEK. The 35mm negative was scanned and digitally restored in 2K. The magnetic soundtrack was also digitized by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium – CINEMATEK. Selected as part of the Berlinale's official competition in 1982, the film in its restored version screened 40 years later at the 52nd Berlinale Forum. This screening marks the Canadian premiere of the restored 2K version of the film. FREE for Members. Non-members: $10—your ticket to this screening includes admission to Contemporary Calgary. Our galleries are open from 12-5 PM for viewing prior to attending the program. #ContemporaryCalgary #PerspectiveFilmSeries #BeiruttheEncounter #YYCEvents #YYCnow #YYCArts
