We are thrilled to have raised over $6.4 million in support of Providence Living at The Views, made possible by the generous contributions from our donors including Aune Foundation, Y. P. Heung Foundation, Eldercare Foundation, Conconi Family Foundation, and Doug and Teri Loughran. Set to open this summer in the Comox Valley, The Views is Canada's first public, non-profit long-term care village based on the concepts of a dementia village as well as Providence's made-in BC model of care called Home for Us. Offering a new form of person-centred care focused on emotional connection, The Views encourages residents to live their best lives within a homelike environment without compromising on quality medical care. This is only the beginning of what we can accomplish together. With your support, we can create an even better life for seniors and older adults on Vancouver Island, across the province, and beyond. “It’s centered around the needs of residents, and an important step in the evolution of care at a critical time for our aging population," says Tom Arnold, executive director of Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation. As a charity dedicated to helping seniors age with dignity, Eldercare Foundation understands the challenges older adults on Vancouver Island face when living with chronic illness at home or in long-term care. Inspired by the life-changing model of care at Providence Living at The Views, we extend our deep gratitude to the Eldercare Foundation for their generous $1 million gift and commitment to transforming care for seniors and older adults. Based on the concepts of a dementia village and Providence's Home for Us model of care, The Views will offer residents independence, social connections, and everyday activities that give them joy and purpose. Pain is the second leading cause of disability and costs the Canadian economy more than heart disease, cancer, and HIV combined, according to Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada. And yet, there is little infrastructure in place to treat people with chronic pain. St. Paul's Hospital is embarking on an ambitious program to transform assessment and treatment for chronic pain, and we are proud to introduce the inaugural Chair in Pain Management, Vishal Varshney. As the first in BC, the Chair will lead important groundwork for the next decades of life-changing discovery and innovation in complex pain research and interventional pain management. An anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician at St. Paul's Hospital, Dr. Varshney was one of the first physicians certified in Pain Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in western Canada. Under Dr. Varshney's leadership, St. Paul's Hospital will usher in a new and innovative model of care to train the next generation of physicians and care providers. As we move toward the new St. Paul's Hospital, this important program will continue to enhance the quality of care for patients and their caregivers across BC and beyond.
