About us
Johns Hopkins Medicine is a governing structure for the University’s School of Medicine and the health system, coordinating their research, teaching, patient care, and related enterprises. The Johns Hopkins Hospital opened in 1889, followed four years later by the university’s School of Medicine, revolutionizing medical practice, teaching, and research in the United States. The hospital is now part of the Johns Hopkins Health System, which includes two other acute-care hospitals and additional integrated health-care delivery components, with a network of primary and specialty care practices throughout Maryland, outpatient care, long-term care, and home care. The Johns Hopkins University opened in 1876 as America’s first research university, founded for the express purpose of expanding knowledge and putting that knowledge to work for the good of humanity. Two Interconnected Institutions: Over the years, the University and Hospital have grown, and—sometimes jointly, sometimes separately—they have created affiliated organizations. The Johns Hopkins Institutions is a collective name for the University and the Johns Hopkins Health System. The Johns Hopkins University includes nine academic and research divisions, and numerous centers, institutes, and affiliated entities. Johns Hopkins Medicine is a governing structure for the University’s School of Medicine and the health system, coordinating their research, teaching, patient care, and related enterprises.

Blount’s disease affects the growth plates around the knee, causing a child’s leg to bow outward. The exact cause of Blount’s disease is unknown, but studies show that the condition’s severity is related to obesity and that the disease most commonly occurs among Black adolescents. In a study published in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, Johns Hopkins Children's Center researchers examined how race-associated socioeconomic disparities and high body mass index impacted the severity of the condition for children. https://bit.ly/3ycs798

On March 21, staff members and leaders from across The Johns Hopkins Hospital gathered to hear the good news that the hospital had received its fifth consecutive Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Less than 10% of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet designation, and less than 1% of U.S. hospitals have earned it five consecutive times. The Magnet designation is a prestigious recognition of nursing excellence, quality patient care and innovation in professional nursing practice is a tribute to our nurses and all of our care team members, who provide compassionate, patient-centered and family-centered care 24/7.

Congratulations to the First Care at Home DAISY Award Winner - Laura Ridgeway JHCH introduced the award in the fall of 2023, calling for nominations from patients, staff, caregivers and volunteers. Out of all of the nominations received, Laura’s was selected by the review committee in early spring. The nomination, which was submitted by one of Laura’s patient’s, stated in part that “Laura has been my home wound care nurse for years. I’m a complicated patient, but Laura is so good at what she does and has such an amazing bedside manner that I always feel I’ve got an advocate…” Carla Johnson, Laura’s manager, commented that “Laura has the gift of patience. She is understanding, thoughtful, and caring… She is a true team player, always striving to meet the mark, and help out her team.
