We are THRILLED to announce our 2024 Team Member of the Year - Tiff Lorber! Tiff is an OB Tech & HUC with over a decade of service at Lakewood. Tiff delivers high, quality personalized care to all patients she interacts with, and extends that service and compassion to her fellow staff, too. We were AMAZED at the sea of orange at our GIVE ORANGE event this past Friday where sponsors and attendees helped us raise over $45,000 for our Lakewood Oncology Fund! These dollars will go directly support our patients and their families as they navigate cancer treatment at Lakewood. Special thanks to Sandra Thompson for sharing her cancer journey at Lakewood over the past year, as well as to Dr. Wade Swenson, oncology provider, and Kali Pachan, social worker. You all shared the difference Lakewood Orange makes in the lives of our patients and their families each day.

I truly enjoyed participating in a documentary viewing and panel discussion at Minnesota State University Moorhead about Atul Gawande's transformative work, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, with Richard Lahti, Tracie Mallberg, Theodore Gracyk, and Michael Van Scoy. The discussion reaffirmed my belief in the profound impact of Gawande's insights on our approach to healthcare, especially in the context of aging and end-of-life care. Gawande challenges us to rethink our traditional medical models, which often prioritize treatment over quality of life, especially in the later stages of life. One of the key takeaways from "Being Mortal" is the importance of person-centered care. Which prioritizes patient preferences at the forefront of medical decisions. It’s not just about prolonging life, but about ensuring quality of life, respecting patient autonomy, and acknowledging the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of aging and dying. I was able to share the great work being done at Lakewood Health System in rural palliative care, which serves as a model for other rural health systems. Our panel also touched on the systemic changes needed in healthcare policies and practices to accommodate these ideals. There is a growing need for healthcare professionals trained in geriatrics and palliative care, who can navigate the complex emotional and medical needs of the elderly and terminally ill. I am grateful for the enlightening exchange with my fellow panelists and look forward to continuing this vital conversation in our respective fields. #BeingMortal #Healthcare #PalliativeCare #EndOfLifeCare #PatientCenteredCare
