About us

We began as a renewable energy company more than a century ago by harnessing the hydropower of the St. Louis River in northeastern Minnesota. Today, we’re an investor-owned electric utility and division of ALLETE Inc. We deliver safe, reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy to 150,000 customers, including 14 municipal customers and some of the largest energy users in the United States in a 26,000-square-mile region of northern Minnesota rich with mineral deposits and timber. At Minnesota Power, employees at all levels can develop their strengths, broaden their experiences and take on new roles and responsibilities. We’re also proud to be recognized as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Company for our commitment to supporting service members, military families and veterans.

Call us over achievers if you will, but for the 14th year in a row, Minnesota Power—together with our customers—has EXCEEDED the state of Minnesota’s energy savings goal! And, not to brag, but we’re the only Minnesota utility to have done that each year since 2010. Kudos to our conservation team for empowering customers with tools to help them reduce their energy use. Those efforts paid off by saving 73,589,465 kilowatt-hours in 2023, enough energy to power about 9,000 homes for a year! All the details https://lnkd.in/gXg2kJq3 #EarthDay

We’re honored to be recognized by the Minnesota Census of Women in Corporate Leadership for having gender parity on both our board and executive leadership team, one of only three of the largest publicly traded companies in Minnesota to achieve the status in 2023. Five of 10 ALLETE board members and three of six executive officers are women. Creating and strengthening an inclusive culture is one way ALLETE continues to put sustainability into action. Thanks to St. Catherine University and Twin Cities Business for naming us a company of Special Distinction for the fifth year in a row, and for hosting a wonderful event today to honor all the women who are leading the way at their respective companies.
