A newly formed coalition of housing organizations has unveiled a plan to revolutionize affordable housing in NYC, aligning with the Adams Administration's efforts. Their proposal aims to utilize part of the city's $24 billion housing budget to transform vacant office spaces into equitable, cooperative homes in Manhattan Midtown South. The Coalition, which was formed in August 2023, is comprised of National Cooperative Bank, Amalgamated Bank, National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International (NCBA CLUSA), Cooperative Development Foundation, Council of New York Cooperatives & Condominiums, UHAB, Mutualist Society, Inclusiv, and coordinated by 1worker1vote, and urges that $3.6 billion (15 percent) of those funds be used to create permanently affordable cooperative housing.
