  • The NWMO’s updated Confidence in Safety reports confirming we are confident a deep geological repository can be constructed to safely and responsibly manage Canada’s used nuclear fuel at both potential sites under consideration: one in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the other in the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario. "Safety is at the core of everything we do. It has driven our project design, engineering, environmental research and community engagement,” said Laurie, Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO. “These reports are the culmination of years of meticulous study by our science and engineering teams, and they represent a major milestone as we prepare to select a site later this year.” The NWMO has been conducting studies at these sites for several years now, starting with desktop studies using regional information, and getting progressively more detailed.    The work now includes data from deep boreholes, seismic studies, and other studies highlighting the geological features in each location and ensuring both sites can safely contain, and isolate used nuclear fuel.  Read more about the reports here. https://nwmo.co/44aKVBz

  • “While a big part of our focus in 2024 is selecting a site, that decision is not just a milestone for this year. It is the beginning of a new chapter as we look towards the future,” said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO. “By continuing to collaborate with local communities, Indigenous peoples, scientific experts, international leaders, the nuclear industry, governments and others, I am confident that we can implement Canada’s plan and create the future together.”

  • We were delighted to participate in the Ignace Nuclear Exploration Event. The event saw more than 500 people visit tables from nuclear experts including Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission – Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire, Ontario Power Generation, the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities, and more. Thanks to the The Corporation of the Township of Ignace for their hard work in organizing this successful event!

  • The NWMO attended the Nuclear Exploration Exhibition in Ignace over the weekend. The event educated the public on the nuclear energy industry. Read about Kiza Sauve, our Licensing Manager's, experience representing us at this wonderful event.

I was excited and honoured to attend the Northwest Nuclear Exploration Event (https://lnkd.in/eKA5w3Sk) in Ignace, ON last week. On behalf of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, my colleague, Jeff Binns, Ph.D. and I staffed the “NWMO – Regulatory Decision Making: Impact Assessment and Licensing” booth. Over 500 community members and leaders from both Ignace and surrounding areas attended the event over the 2 days. The highlight for me was Friday when about 100 students from the local schools were at the event. The students had great questions about the project, our work at the NWMO and shared dreams of their futures.  At our booth, Jeff and I shared information regarding the next phase of the APM DGR Project – Regulatory Decision Making. We answered thoughtful and important questions regarding timing, engagement opportunities and also recommended that the participants speak to the regulators that attended the event. As someone that grew up in Thunder Bay, and has a camp (cottage) in the area, being able to represent my employer at events in Northern Ontario is a dream come true! Seeing a moose during my drive back to Thunder Bay on Sunday, getting to stop in and see family, and make a quick visit to my camp was the icing on the cake after such an enriching time in Ignace.
