About us

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is San Diego County’s leading, local hunger-relief organization. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 44 million pounds of food, and served, on average, 400,000 people per month in San Diego County. The Food Bank recently expanded our efforts in North County with the acquisition of the North County Food Bank. The Food Bank receives food from a variety of sources and through financial contributions that enable us to purchase protein-rich foods, fresh produce, and dry staple foods such as beans, oatmeal, and rice. We also benefit from the generosity of more than 25,000 volunteers annually that help to sort and distribute donated and purchased food products. The Food Bank works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through a network of more than 500 nonprofit partner organizations that include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and low-income daycare centers in communities throughout San Diego County. The Food Bank also distributes food directly to those in need at over 200 distribution sites throughout the county. • The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Joan Jacobs, a truly dedicated civic leader and visionary philanthropist who worked to make the world a better place. Together with her husband, Irwin, Joan’s philanthropic support spanned health and medicine, arts and culture, and technology. She also dedicated herself to serving on many community and civic boards, always with the goal of enhancing our region. She leaves a lasting legacy of compassion and support for so many nonprofits in our region. At the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, we were blessed to have Joan’s support for our mission to end hunger in San Diego County for more than two decades. Side-by-side, Joan and Irwin provided generous support and resources to help our organization grow and become the true regional food safety net for our County. Joan and Irwin’s belief in creating positive generational change has forever transformed us and together they have set the true north for our organization. Joan is and always will be known as a trailblazer for change, the matriarch of the generous Jacobs family and a friend to this organization. We count ourselves blessed to have been touched by her vision for our region.

  • Our staff at the San Diego Food Bank are doing such an amazing job that we selected not one, but two staff members to be the Employee of the Month for the month of March! 👏 Congratulations to Alison for being selected as Employee of the Month for displaying the Food Bank's core values of synergy, leadership, moxie and integrity! In her role as the Food Bank's Nonprofit Services Manager, Alison coordinates food deliveries for our government food programs, assists our nonprofit partners picking up food from our Miramar warehouse, supports our nonprofit partners with best practices and education, attends annual monitor visit for our nonprofit partners’ feeding programs and opens up new distribution sites with her team. "I enjoy being able to use my gifts, talents, and abilities to make an impact in the lives of those facing food insecurity. Food is more than just physical nourishment - it’s a reflection of community, culture, and the experience of sharing a meal. It’s meaningful knowing that the San Diego Food Bank’s food resources make it to the tables of so many individuals throughout San Diego County," she explained. 💚 Big thank you to Alison for her continued dedication to the Food Bank's mission for the last five years! We're grateful for all of your hard work and are lucky to have you on our team! #EmployeeOfTheMonth #Kudos #SDFoodBank

  • We're wrapping up National Volunteer Month by celebrating one of our most dedicated volunteers, Paul! Paul is a beloved San Diego Food Bank volunteer who has been dedicating his time to our mission for more than 12 years! Commonly known as the San Diego Food Bank's “Mayor,” Paul is a familiar face around the warehouse, clocking in more than 10,000 volunteer hours to the Food Bank's mission! 👏💚 He helps cut bags (as pictured) to be filled with fresh produce, packs senior food boxes and lends a helping hand at many Food Bank events. He's been a part of every Food Bank Gala, all 12 years of the previous San Diego Blues Festival and has even represented the Food Bank at tabling events throughout the years. “In a world divided, it’s nice to have a place to go where you can change lives and help heal communities. The Food Bank is a family that understands that our true purpose is to serve others. I’m proud to be a part of that effort,” Paul explained. This National Volunteer Month, and every month, we’re grateful for Paul and all of our volunteers who donate their time to help feed local families in need. 🍎 Feeling inspired to volunteer?
