VOLUNTEER | We’ve been celebrating our volunteers all week as part of National Volunteer Week. Volunteers help Silvera’s seniors live their best lives every day. Did you know that some of Silvera’s residents are volunteers too! Nellie Befus, a 96-year-old resident of Aspen Commons, was one of the first volunteers at the Calgary Public Library and has now been volunteering there for 50 years. She also runs Aspen’s library in residence. Thank you to Nellie and all our volunteers - we couldn’t do it without you. As you can imagine, Nellie has been attracting some media attention. Congratulations to James Nibourg, a councillor from the County of Stettler, for being elected today to take over as president of the Alberta Seniors and Community Housing Association. Outgoing president Arlene Adamson, the CEO of Silvera for Seniors, received a standing ovation from her peers at ASCHA’s AGM after she shared her final remarks as president. The AGM was only one part of ASCHA’s annual Home for Housing Convention & Trade Show at the Hyatt in Calgary. #Home4Housing #seniorshousing

IWD | International Women's Day is a global celebration of the achievements of women and encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life. On this day, we would like to feature a very special woman who happens to reside at Silvera’s Aspen community. Her name is Doreen Kamis-Christoffersen, and her story is unique. She is a veteran who was only 16 when she began nursing school during World War II. Kyle Fawcett, Silvera's Chief External Relations Officer (right), was pleased today to join Martina Jileckova, CEO of Onward Homes (left) and Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, for the Alberta Government's announcement of $1.2 million in funding for seven housing organizations, including Silvera. This funding will help Silvera optimize the number of safe, reasonably priced rental housing units within its portfolio.
