To show appreciation to General Manager Sylvie, Driver Vera made a one-of-a-kind school bus quilt as a gift. What a sweet, warm gesture and what an amazing quilt! Check out the photo of Sylvie (pictured on the left) and driver Cindy (right) showing off the quilt to the team. Team member Bunny Knott, Training and Safety Supervisor, had this to say about Sylvie and the Haileybury, ON team, “We are a family here at Haileybury and our general manager is the glue that holds us together.”

Today’s WHM spotlight is on Heidi Conarroe, Area General Manager for Canada West and Trinity Transportation. “Starting as a school bus driver in 2015 and climbing the ladder through to area general manager in North Central Region has been a great experience with National Express. I am truly blessed to work with some remarkable professionals and really decent people. I have been given opportunity, and I have worked for opportunity – sometimes successfully and sometimes I have missed the mark.  Being a leader is about how you treat people and building relationships. Having a title doesn’t make anyone a leader. There are women in leadership roles all over National Express without management titles. The ‘school bus driver’ title was invaluable to me, and I continue to look at things through the ‘driver lens’. It’s a different appreciation because they are the ones who safely transport our kids, they are the face of our company, the holders of our reputation, and the first line in customer service delivery. The ‘driver lens’ keeps most of my day in perspective.  My advice to women in this company who are looking to be leaders is to: 1) Remember that success comes from ‘team’ (give them the credit) 2) Work hard (be tenacious, set high standards, don’t apologize for your strengths, your work will speak for itself) 3) Remember it’s a job (set some boundaries, have a life outside of work) 4) Take care of yourself (we usually aren’t so great at that, get a massage, go to the spa, use your benefits package!) 5) If your light can’t shine and be seen in this company, go where it can and 6) Remember that the most important things you will ever do in your life will never be seen publicly anyhow. ”
