The Salvation Army in Canada

From July to December of 2023, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team in London, Ont., worked with other agencies to aid the vulnerable population. The initiative was created by the City of London, who called upon The Salvation Army to assist them. The program, Service Depots at Encampments, provided daily basic needs to people experiencing homelessness, living in unsheltered areas.

In the past, motherhood was challenging for Hillary. She struggled with addiction and, as a result, lost custody of her four older children. This painful experience inspired her to get sober and take measures to ensure this would not happen again. Hillary first heard of The Salvation Army’s New Choices program, which supports women with substance use issues who are pregnant or mothering children, while she was in addiction recovery. Initially, she didn’t think much of it; however, she became pregnant again, which made her reconsider.

When a local community kitchen faced theft, The Salvation Army swiftly extended support. Despite not being directly affiliated, a strong relationship prompted immediate assistance, showcasing the power of community solidarity in times of need.

Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience. There are challenges and changes you have to adapt to. As more newcomers settle around Northern Ontario, The Salvation Army food bank in Sudbury plans to integrate more culturally relevant foods. This will help families to have a smoother transition.

For 14 years, Lisa was a familiar and friendly face to guests and staff at The Salvation Army’s Belkin House community kitchen in Vancouver. Belkin House is a facility that provides a home to the homeless and those who are at risk of homelessness. Lisa volunteered five days a week, helped in the kitchen and organized the dining room for the guests that would come in daily.
