Improving the lives of amputees by providing essential funding for artificial limbs and advocacy for amputees' rights.

About us

A philosophy of “amputees helping amputees” has been the hallmark of The War Amps since its creation by amputee veterans in 1918. Since then, our programs have grown from assisting war amputees to all Canadian amputees, including children. Our Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which is unique in the world, offers comprehensive services to child amputees and their families, including financial assistance, advocacy and peer support. We also provide resources for adult amputees, and our historic work for veterans continues to the present day. The Key Tag Service was established in 1946 to create jobs for amputee veterans returning home from war and to provide Canadians with a valuable key return service. Donations from the public to the Key Tag Service fund our many programs – we do not receive government grants. Since its creation, the Key Tag Service sheltered workshop in Ontario has employed hundreds of people with disabilities, and we continue to employ people with disabilities here and throughout our organization.

#WeThrive | Saoud was born missing his left leg below the knee and uses a wheelchair. He shares a hack that others with similar amputations may find helpful. “I’m only human, so I often forget things! I set a goal to drink more water during the day, and as a wheelchair user, it’s not always easy to carry a bottle in my hands. So, I started placing bottles in various places. For example, one is on my work desk at home, one is in my sports bag, one is in my school rucksack, and so on. This “life hack” can be applied to anything, and it has considerably reduced my stress levels!" »

Through his work with The War Amps, he has continued the legacy of "amputees helping amputees" by sharing his positive outlook and knowledge with new amputees and their families. Throughout Limb Loss & Limb Difference Awareness Month, members of the community are encouraged to use #WeThrive to share their stories of strength, resilience, and challenges. “I have to admit that being proud as an amputee is a feeling that grows with you as you get older. When I was young, people’s stares and nasty comments didn’t help me with acceptance. I thought I was different and didn’t dare show my artificial limb in public. By going to CHAMP seminars, I met some wonderful people, and I started to feel proud of my prosthesis because I saw others who were proud of theirs. Today, I wear shorts with no problem. I realized how beautiful it is not to blend in with the crowd but to stand out in a positive way!”
