Did you know there are more blood types than A, B, AB and O? When most people need a transfusion, they can be safely matched with 1 of the 4 common blood types. But for people who need frequent transfusions -- such as patients undergoing chemotherapy and people with inherited blood disorders such as sickle cell disorder -- extended blood typing is needed to find a more precise match and prevent a potentially severe reaction to a transfusion of the wrong blood type. This week, we had the honor of hosting Jozef Sikela, Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchodu České republiky, along with representatives from various Czech companies at our headquarters in Waltham, Mass. and at our viral-vector manufacturing facility in Lexington, Mass. The Czech Republic has been a wonderful place for Thermo Fisher to do business, and it was a privilege to welcome members of the largest Czech business delegation to ever visit the United States. Earlier this year, the FDA banned grease-proofing substances containing PFAS for food packaging use. Toby Astill, Ph.D., our Director for Food and Environmental Safety, was featured in LCGC International, where he talked about ongoing work with laboratories and regulators to advance PFAS research and testing to mitigate these chemicals' environmental and health risks.
