Welcome to the Town of Yemassee - The Focal Point of the Four Counties.
About us
Welcome to the Town of Yemassee, located on the banks of the Pocotaligo River in Beaufort & Hampton counties in South Carolina and often referred to as the geographical center of the Lowcountry. The population was 1,080 at the 2020 census. Yemassee is also very near the borders of Colleton and Jasper counties and is often considered to be the geographical center or heart of the Lowcountry region. The town is divided by the county line between Beaufort and Hampton counties, which follows the roadbed of the CSX railroad. Most of the town’s population presently lies within Hampton County (as of 2023). As defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Beaufort County portion of Yemassee is included within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town plays host to three historical plantations including Bindon, Cotton Hall & Tomotley which are protected by conservation easements to preserve our pristine landscape for generations to come.

The Town of Yemassee is inviting proposals for engineering services related to sewer system improvements within our community. These improvements will involve installing an alternative sewer system serving residential and industrial customers on River Rd. Additionally, existing septic tanks and sewer infrastructure will be abandoned, and remote monitoring units (RTUs) will be installed to enhance the efficiency of our pump stations. This project is funded, in part, through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) via a subrecipient agreement with Beaufort County. Day-to-day project management will collaborate with the successful proposer and LRWS, which owns and operates Yemassee's water and sewer system. We look forward to receiving proposals from skilled professionals and firms eager to contribute to the betterment of our community through these essential projects. Your expertise will help us enhance our solid waste pickup services and improve our sewer system, thereby enhancing the quality of life for Yemassee residents. For more information, click here:
