Today marked a special moment at our Y as we convened the end-of-fiscal-year Board of Governors meeting. This gathering was not just a “meeting of the minds” but a celebration of dedication and leadership, particularly honoring volunteer Fred Sotelo. With a remarkable 4-year term as our Association Board of Governors Chair, Fred's contributions have been immeasurable. Beyond his role on the Association Board, Fred is a committed Jackie Robinson Family YMCA board member and has played a pivotal role in the Southeast San Diego flood relief efforts. His leadership and passionate advocacy have been instrumental in mobilizing support and raising awareness for vital community needs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Fred for his years of service and the lasting impact he will continue to have on the San Diego community!   PS: We're on the case to replace Fred's recognition award after it swiftly slipped from his hands and broke—proof that even in moments of planned recognition, surprises can happen!

✨BELONGING AT IT’S BEST!✨ Last Friday, the YMCA of San Diego had an incredible recognition and innovation summit celebrating belonging, our team's well-being, and spotlighting innovation at the Y. It was a time to honor our staff's anniversary milestones, reflect on growth and achievements, and get inspired to look forward to the future! We are incredibly grateful to all the Y staff who attended the summit. It was an inspiring and motivating day that reminded us of the crucial role each of our team members plays in positively impacting our community. Without their tireless efforts, we would not be able to fulfill our Y's mission and vision of transforming lives and communities. Special thanks to Sharp HealthCare for hosting our leadership retreat at the Sharp Prebys Innovation Center, and thank you to all the presenters, guest speakers, innovation pitch participants, judges, and everyone who contributed to making this event such a tremendous success! Wow! San Diego, you have done it again! This year, the community has raised a record-breaking amount of $8.4 million, which will go back to the community and change lives for the better. Thanks to your incredible generosity, everyone in our community, from children to families and active adults, will have access to vital resources and the support they need. Your kindness is truly making a difference! The Annual Campaign is truly a team effort, and we could not have done it without each and every one of you! It was an amazing weekend in South San Diego, as the Border View Family YMCA celebrated the reopening of its soccer field with a ribbon-cutting event for the new PNC Bank Field alongside San Diego Wave Fútbol Club 🎉⚽️ The event was a fantastic community celebration, with everyone coming together to celebrate the positive impact this new field will have on the community. We are incredibly grateful to all those who made this gift possible, especially our partners PNC and San Diego Wave FC. We would also like to thank San Diego Wave FC players Savannah McCaskill and Kyra Carusa for helping break in the new field, running soccer drills with our youth, and for a fun meet and greet and Q+A. A day the kids will never forget! We look forward to seeing the PNC Bank Field continue to serve the community, providing a safe space for young people to engage in soccer programs and activities. It's Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week! We would like to take a moment to recognize and appreciate all the individuals involved in our Y Expanded Learning Programs who make it possible for us to offer impactful and amazing programs. Our programs operate in over 84 schools across San Diego County and we have a team of over 1,000 staff members who work tirelessly to achieve this. We appreciate them every day, but this week is a special opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation. YMCA Childcare Resource Service has joined forces with KPBS to create a comprehensive six-part digital series called "Where’s My Village," which delves into San Diego County's childcare crisis. Each episode of the series focuses on a different aspect of the crisis, including the availability of infant care, accessing subsidies, challenges specific to childcare providers, the reality of transitional kindergarten, and the unique needs of families with children with special needs. We want to thank KPBS for amplifying the voices of San Diegans experiencing this crisis and for highlighting the voices of those working to fix it. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and we, at the YMCA of San Diego County, are committed to protecting children from all forms of abuse. We have partnered with the County of San Diego and a coalition of over 200 organizations known as Partners in Prevention to achieve this goal. Additionally, we are proud to participate in the The Y (YMCA)’s #FiveDaysOfAction from April 15 to 19, a nationwide effort to prevent child abuse and promote family well-being.
