Sarnia/Lambton - Plant Facilities

Corunna, our largest site, is capable of producing in excess of 3 billion pounds of petrochemicals annually. Originally devoted entirely to processing crude-oil-based feedstock, the facility now processes up to 100% natural gas liquid (NGL) feedstock.

NGLs are delivered to the site by pipeline and railcar for processing. Co-products are derived during petrochemical production at the site.

The resin from both Moore and St. Clair River polyethylene sites is transported to end-product manufacturers via rail and truck in the form of small pellets.

Our customers use the plastic resins we manufacture in applications ranging from packaging for food, water, e-commerce and medical devices and supplies; to recreational equipment and artificial turf, toys, and artificial turf; to heavy duty sacks, hygiene films, shrink and stretch wrap, agricultural tanks, waste and recycling containers, and caps and closures. 


Corunna Site

Corunna, Ontario, Canada

Located in Corunna, Ontario, NOVA Chemicals’ Corunna Site is a petrochemical facility that can produce 1.8 billion pounds of ethylene and up to 700 million pounds of co-products annually. It began operations in late 1977 and was purchased by NOVA Chemicals in 1988. It was the first fully integrated cracker and petrochemical complex in North America.

Production

The Corunna site’s feedstock is delivered to the site by pipeline and railcar then thermally cracked to manufacture primarily ethylene, but also propylene, butadiene, benzene and other co-products.

The ethylene produced is shipped via pipeline to NOVA Chemicals’ Moore and St. Clair River sites for conversions into polyethylene and to other third-party customers.

Approximately 450 employees work at the Corunna facility.


Moore Site

Mooretown, Ontario, Canada

Situated in Mooretown, Ontario, NOVA Chemicals’ Moore facility converts ethylene into polyethylene resins.

The facility has been operating since 1977 and was originally owned by Union Carbide Corporation, until NOVA Chemicals’ acquisition in 1987. During the site’s history, both high-density (HDPE) and low-density (LDPE) polyethylene has been consistently manufactured using NOVAPOL processing technology.

Production

Ethylene feedstock arrives at the Moore site via pipeline from NOVA Chemicals’ Corunna site. The facility has a rated capacity of about 840 million pounds of polyethylene per year. These materials are transported to end-product manufacturers, in the form of small pellets, via rail and truck throughout North America.

End Products

Polyethylene resins from Moore are used for applications in a variety of markets and industries: from blown film to extrusion and thermo-forming to injection molding – these HDPE and LDPE resins are found in multitudes of consumer goods. Some of the most recognizable end products include shrink wrap, food packaging wrap, trash cans and drums, pipes, gas containers, automotive parts and outdoor toys.

Approximately 170 full-time employees work at the Moore Site. The facility is ISO 9001 registered.

St. Clair River Site

Corunna, Ontario, Canada

NOVA Chemicals’ St. Clair River site is located in Corunna, Ontario. The facility has the capacity to produce 395 million pounds (180 kilotonnes) of polyethylene per year.

SCLAIRTECH™ technology is the primary processing technology used for manufacturing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) at the St. Clair River site. This technology has the flexibility to make a broad range of products, from linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) through to high density polyethylene (HDPE). The site also features a pilot plant, built in 1995, to support and further develop Advanced SCLAIRTECH technology. The pilot plant is capable of testing new catalysts and new polyethylene products in preparation for commercial scale-up. The majority of site production currently is HDPE. The site has been operating since 1959 and was purchased by NOVA Chemicals in late 1993.

Production

Liquid ethylene feedstock is transported to the site via pipeline from the Corunna site and is used in the production of approximately 40 different grades of polyethylene resins, which are sold to our customers in pellet form. Annual production capacity at St. Clair is 395 million pounds (180 kilotonnes) of polyethylene.

End Products

HDPE end-use applications are found in a variety of products that people rely on everyday. A few common HDPE applications include margarine tubs, pool covers, barrels and drums, caps and closures, household bottles and pipes.

Approximately 130 full-time employees work at the St. Clair River site. The facility is ISO 9001 registered.
