Your Partners in Taking Action

Rural crime rates remain high in Alberta, leaving communities on edge and overwhelmed. The Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association wants to help reduce crime in rural areas and to create a more thorough understanding and awareness of the law and best safety practices. We also help form a sense of community, as protecting Alberta’s rural areas is a collective responsibility. The Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association provides opportunities and resources for citizens to take action in protecting what’s most important to them. Together with local RCMP detachments, we create a strong awareness, expand law presence and help reduce crime.

The number 1 and most common crime in Alberta is fraud. It is estimated $100 million is lost annually to fraud.

Other common crimes in Alberta include property crime (breaking & entering, theft) and assault.

Many vehicle thefts are crimes of opportunity. Some of the best ways to keep your vehicle safe are to remove your keys from your car or truck if it isn’t occupied, keep your doors locked and your windows up, and park your vehicle in a garage or a visible, well-lit area.

It can be difficult to think a child may start using drugs, but it is important to remain aware of any changes you might see in your child. If you can intervene early, you can help prevent substance abuse, which can lead to injury, criminal involvement, dropping out of school, brain development or loss of life.

Some common signs of drug use in children and teens include:

  • Not taking care of themselves 
  • Memory lapse, lack of coordination, slurred speech
  • Eating more or less than usual
  • Being very energetic, talking fast, or saying things that don't make sense

CPTED, or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, uses the physical space around your home or business to influence criminals’ decision to target you. 

Use gravel pathing, plants and lighting to make your structure less accessible and desirable to thieves.

If you would like to become a member of Alberta Rural Crime Watch and work towards creating a safer Alberta, your first step is to find a chapter near you or even start a new chapter. There are already a number of chapters established throughout Alberta. Once you have identified the chapter in your area, you can contact them, and they will provide you with the necessary information and tools to become a member. 

As a member of Alberta Rural Crime Watch, you will gain the resources and connections you need to prevent crime and create safer communities.
