Jazz Up Your Life

Songs from the “Great American Song Book” are featured when the Jazz Kicks Band performs March 24 at Utah State University’s Caine Performance Hall. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Admission for the concert is $8 for adults and free for all students. Tickets are available at the Caine College of the Arts Box Office, room L101 of the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s Logan campus, by calling 435-797-8022 or online through the college’s Production Services website (arts.usu.edu).

The Kicks Band is led by Larry Smith, former director of USU’s jazz studies in the music department. The ensemble includes USU faculty members and some of northern Utah’s best jazz musicians, Smith said.

Among the evening’s selections are I’ve Got You Under My Skin and Crazy Rhythm as played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Other selections include Love for Sale as played by the Buddy Rich Band and After You’re Gone as played by Woody Herman’s band.

Smith has arranged several selections for the concert, including Speak Low, I’ll Remember April and Stella by Starlight.

Singer Monica Fronk is featured in Bye, Bye Blackbird and They Say that Falling in Love is Wonderful.

Smith said many of the pieces to be performed were originally written for Broadway shows or movies by composers that include Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weil and Victor Young.

“The program includes driving, up-tempo flag wavers and lush romantic ballads,” Smith said, “the best of big band jazz.”
