TOWN OF STAMFORD Concise Summary of Ordinance Regulating Dogs and Wolf-hybrids In accordance with 20 V.S.A. sec. 3549, 24 V.S.A. secs. 2291 (10), (14), and (15), and 24 V.S.A. Chapter 59, the Selectboard of the Town of Stamford adopted the Ordinance Regulating Dogs and Wolf-hybrids on May 4, 2023. The purpose of this ordinance is to regulate the keeping of dogs and wolf-hybrids and to provide for their leashing, muzzling, restraint, impoundment, destruction and running at large, in order to protect the public health and safety of the town and preserve the quiet enjoyment of its residents' homes and properties. Said ordinance includes the sections: Authority, Purpose, Definitions, Nuisances, Collar and License, Enforcement, Penalties and Costs, Impoundment, Investigation of Vicious Dogs, Potentially Vicious Dogs, Other Laws, Severability and Effective Date. Citizens may require a Permissive Referendum - that is, a vote on the ordinance - at the annual or a special town meeting by means of a petition signed by not less than 5% percent of the qualified voters of the town and presented to the Selectboard or the town clerk within 44 days following the date the ordinance was adopted. The Selectboard shall schedule the vote within 60 days from the date the petition is received. The ordinance will become effective on July 3, 2023 unless a petition is filed.
